This is beautiful top. I really like the crochet lace and ruffle detail on the front. It makes the top more feminine without being immodest.

The yellow bow around the waist is a nice touch, though some may not prefer to have their waist cinched up. I think it would look great even without the belt, which would also be more comfortable.

Priced at $32.25, it’s more than I would pay for a top, but it is very pretty and would make a nice option for attending a summer wedding, paired with a nice skirt and heels.

The sleeves are pretty short, it’s almost sleeveless. Normally I prefer to have longer sleeves, but I think I would be fine wearing this.

The neckline looks like it might be a little low, but that could easily be remedied with a higher white cami or tank under it – the fabric looks like it is sheer enough that you would need to wear something under it anyway.

Here is a cute top that is dressy and looks comfortable too. The waist is fitted, so that might be an issue for some, but I think overall it is modest.

When the sleeves are big like this, I like to wear a tank or cami underneath of the same color so nothing shows when I raise my arms.

The necklace is cute and eye catching, but I try to avoid necklaces that are too long because they draw eyes away from my face.

I really like the sleeves because they are pretty long, yet they are loose enough that it wouldn’t be too warm on a hot day.

This top can be dressed up or down. With a pair of jeans or a casual skirt, it would be comfortable for every day. With black pants or skirt like in the picture, it’s dressy enough for a more formal occasion.

We’ve been reviewing a lot of casual looks recently, and this is only a shade different.

Jeans are appropriate, in my book, in certain situations—like work on a farm.  I could mention that her jeans have holes in them, but I’m not sure that it’s intentional, and I have holes in a couple of pairs of mine that I still wear.

The top shows a little more skin than I would suggest, showing off the top of the shoulder that gives her a feminine look.  The shirt, however, it great in that it covers below the midsection.

What do you think of a belt over the shirt?  In this case I think it works.

Here’s a nice look that befits an autumn day. 

Just about any outfit can be spiced up with the addition of contrasting colors—in this case, the sweater helps make the look because of its contrast.

The neckline could be considered a tad low, but it’s offset by the outer layer with the floral pattern.

The necklace hangs at an appropriate height, drawing the eye, but not taking it where it should not go.

This outfit works for me, though it might not be appropriate on all body types.  It says “sophisticated” and not “cheap.”

This tie-back cardigan looks comfortable, and is a nice color (though it comes in four different colors. 

Some things I noticed:

• Button downs can be tricky, but the spacing here is small—meaning less gaping.
• Button down also allows for being more immodest in private—a plus for us husbands out here.
• The shirt seems to get longer in the back.
• That means that you might sit on it when you sit down.
• You shouldn’t have anything exposed when you bend over.

All in all, a great cardigan.  What did you notice?

How many of you know what a soutache is?

A soutache is narrow flat decorative braid, a type of galloon, used in the trimming of drapery or clothing. In clothing soutache is used to conceal a seam. [Wikipedia]

You learn something new every day, don’t you?

This top is pretty in that it’s a nice color, the shoulders are covered, the neckline is high, and I like what looks like elastic near the waistline.

It looks like it’s a decent length, and I think pairing it with a light colored skirt or pants was a classy move.

The embellishments are downplayed because of the color, but they do center on the bust.  Is that a cause of distraction?  Could it be considered immodest?

The Marie top from Mia Bellina has a great look—especially in yellow.  The sleeves are cute, adding a bit of poof.  The length is terrific, I can’t even see the pockets.

The biggest area of concern is the bust line.  There’s a gather in the front that is subtle, but the neckline is pretty low—perfect for the night at home with the husband, not so great in public.

My suggestion would be to find an under -layer that can be paired with this to make it a little more maintenance friendly.

Here’s another top from Mia Bellina. 

The Alexis top is cut a little low to be a modest top.  It is pretty long, so it would be a decent shirt with a modest under layer.

The pleats do draw attention, more so on bigger chested people, I would think.

The sleeves look 3/4, which definitely cover the shoulders.

Over all, it’s a pretty color, and a feminine top, but it leaves us with a question to ponder…

Most of the swimwear at Divinita Sole are tankinis, mix and match style.

That being said, some of them are more modest than others.

This halter top has a band that also ties in the back, and seems to have less flowy material than the others.

The band hangs out below the bust, and draws attention to that area.

The Metro SOS Tankini is much like the Hibiscus that we reviewed yesterday.  This skirt is a tad bit more modest, except that it also has more of a chance of flapping up as you enter the water.

The top could be a little higher, but there won’t be the maintenance issues that you could have in a dress because the material will hug the body.

The back could also be higher.

The pattern is nice and distracting, so I don’t think you’ll have any issues there.

This is for those that are looking for a practical and modest option that doesn’t attempt to cover everything.

What looks great on the rack may not look modest on your body.  With the fact that sizes are not standardized, an item purchased at one store may be different in size from a different store.

So, when you’re trying to find out if that shirt you like is modest, try it on!

That’s right, take it for a spin in front of those unforgiving mirrors.

Here’s some good advice from Katt Anderson from her article, From the Waist Up:

Raise your arms. Does it show your belly? If it does in the dressing room, it will at home.

Maybe you have a larger waist and a roll, like some of us do, then buy a fuller top with detail under your bust. That will make the eye move from that roll, and make people think you have a smaller waist. I watch What Not To Wear.

Now, let’s move up to the chest. While you’re in the dressing room, bend down. Can you see cleavage? If you do, and you really love that top, get a high camy[sic].  You can also buy the fake camy’s[sic]. They hook onto your bra straps and they really work. They are great in the summer.

There’s no reason that you should be surprised at the fit of something if you take the time to try it on while you’re still in the store!

This is a cute halter top tankini with feminine colors. And I really don’t think its possible to cover more skin than this will a tankini top.

The back is still open but just right below the shoulder blades. This top is very fitted and since its make out of swimsuit material it is very clingy. But I think that is where the print in the material comes in handy. The way the poka-dots are on this material distracts the eye in a way that makes the the models curves not quite as visible.

The length of this Tankini top will be sure keep you covered all the time. No worry of midriff showing here!

But all things considered would you feel comfortable wearing this at a public pool?

Here is the fun colored “Chloe” tankini top from limericki.

This cute, stylish, obviously-a-swim-top has a halter top which gives it an open back. For most people who have been convicted to dress modestly this is something that one might quickly pass over. But if you take a second look you’d see that there is elastic around the edge of the whole top part. Which would be sure to not reveal anything more, even after getting wet after a good swim.

This top would be pretty easy to pair with some board shorts which are pretty popular right now and easy to find.

This is not a top that would be considered flashy or revealing to a onlooker. And all things considered, this could very possibly be the perfect top for an young lady who is on the search for a modest and affordable swim top.

This shirt just looks like it would be ultra comfortable.  It’s a little deceiving in terms of size—listed as a large, but if you don’t like things really tight it’ll fit more like a medium.

This is a great shirt for layering—too bad the previous two reviews wouldn’t do well with the blue under-layer—or would they?

I need the ladies to help me out—would blue look good with the brown or black?

In any case, make sure you check out the Used Tops at The Modest Mom because I’m sure they’ll continue to get “new” items in!

Many of the big chains like to show off cleavage on pregnant or nursing mothers.  However, that doesn’t mean that we have to forgo a look simply because they want us too.

If you paired this shirt with a similar or contrasting layer underneath (a camisole or tank top) I think that you would find that this is a great dual purpose shirt.

Home with your husband alone, you can wear it without the under-layer, but out and about you can wear it with!

Is This Modest?

justagirl4god: This is a pretty cute outfit. I like the lacy part of the shirt which raises the neckline, though I think it could be a little higher. The shirt is not too tight, though, and the jeans don’t seem to be either. The bow/ribbon on the front of the shirt draws attention to this area, though, and I would prefer to avoid this type of thing. Overall, mostly modest.

MInTheGap: I like the bright colors, personally. The jeans are fine, and the heels are okay. The pink color that comes down in front is a little distracting in that it has contrast right across the bust line. As for skin showing, it’s not bad, and it’s a pretty outfit.
