One modern style that is great for modesty is pictured at right.  The sweater over the shirt that is left not tucked in is a great look for two reasons:

• The sweater is nice and bulky with a dress shirt underneath and it also allows for good contrast.
• The shirt tails hanging out cover the bottom and the front, and also provide contrast.

We’re not able to see the skirt length, but assuming that it’s a decent length, this outfit works for a casual setting, a date, or even in most business-casual workplaces.

The only thing I would caution here is the material of the skirt.  It looks from this picture like it might be tight.  Straight skirts can be tight, and so you may want to consider something with a bit more mobility or something that doesn’t hug your form too much.

Ignore the top, for the moment, because it is definitely immodest—I mean, sure, you could fix it with an under layer, but I’m not even sure that there’s any debate on that top by itself…

The skirt is what I want to focus on, and boy does this skirt look luxurious.  I mean, it looks warm, it drapes well, and it’s got a nice pattern.

So what do you think of this skirt?  It’s a maxi-skirt, so I think that the length is great.

One of the things that you have to take account in looking for stylish and modest skirts is that you don’t necessarily have to go to a store that only has modest options. 

You can find modest skirts at many stores! 

The trick is practicing discernment.

Take, for example, Pure Clothing.  They have some very stylish pieces, though they may not all be modest. Pricing is a little on the higher end, with the cheapest skirt coming in at $62 and the most expensive at $230. Here are three examples:

Button Through Wool Skirt $102.40

Wool Pencil Skirt $110.40

Jersey Maxi Skirt $62.40

Now, I would rate these three as modest by the criteria we’ve used a lot here—where does it fall on the leg, is it too tight, and is it translucent.  All of these (and many more at the site) are modest with these rules.

Do you have a budget to spend this much?  The answer to this question is more interesting than you think!  If the item is well made, if it lasts a long time, the quality can justify paying a bit more.

Here’s a really pretty blue skirt.  It’s ankle length, so that means that it would be warm in the cooler weather.  There’s gathering material, so coverage isn’t a problem.

The waistband’s elastic, so it should have no problem staying up and provide comfort.

The skirt retails for $165, but you can get it for much less at The Virtuous Closet.

Here’s a simple white skirt that looks to be a decent length.  It has some pretty finishing touches:

This simple white skirt has a timeless elegance. Made from soft white cotton it has a pretty broderie anglaise frill at the hem. Looks great worn with one of the matching blouses or layered as a petticoat with one of our lovely dresses.

However, I think that this skirt could also get confused with a slip.  Perhaps you should just consider the petticoat option?

Here’s a cute skirt with nice colors.  The green gives the Folk type look.  You can’t see it in the picture (which is a good thing!) but there are two pockets, which area always handy.

The skirt might be a tad short, but it does have a nice open flowy feel to it.

What do you think of the style?  Cath Kidston definitely has its own look to it.

Black or red, this skirt has great length to it—when worn as a skirt.

Yes, this skirt/dress is marketed as going either way, and I could definitely see it as a dress—alone or with your husband!  That actually is a nice feature.

But, we’re reviewing it as a skirt, and as such, it’s nice and flowy, with elastic in the band.  The handkerchief look of the hem is nice, and feminine.

What do you think of patterned skirts like this?  Would you prefer red or black?

Married gals, have you ever picked up a skirt like this for it’s dress option?

Ashley Stewart has some interesting clothing, and while we certainly don’t recommend all they have to offer for modesty reasons, there’s a lot of different items that they have that you can wear modestly, or alter with a bit of layering.

This skirt is a perfect example—you can make it long and flowing or short with a ruffle—and the long flowing look looks both comfortable and feminine!

You can use the interior ties when you’re at home with your husband or to create another look.

What do you think of this dress?  It’s only available in this color, so that might turn some women away, but I like orange, so…

From the modesty perspective, it’s down past the knees and hits mid calf.  The fit is nice and flowy—it has a silk-like feel according to the retailer.  The waist is elastic—no problems staying up.

Right now, this blue color doesn’t seem to be available, but every skirt that’s currently offered on their site is what I would consider modest.

How much do you usually spend on a nice, modest skirt?  Though the denim one on this site is $24.99, most of the rest are in the $50-$60 range.

Is that a good deal?

The pleated long slinky fabric skirt I got is navy in color. Its fabric is flowy and extremely comfortable. It is made from 90 percent polyester and 10 percent lycra.

The style is quite versatile and can be worn with a dressy top or a casual one. It is knee length which is nice for people who strive to be modest.

I like the fact that it is easy to care for. It is machine washable in cold water. It can be tumble dried on the low setting.

The company seemed friendly, and they even included a complimentary gift of bazooka bubble gum from Israel which I thought was extremely neat!

I was very pleased with this company and the quality of the skirt.

This skirt is a limited time offer.  There’s only 12 pieces available, and when they’re gone, they are gone.

As far as modesty, this skirt is long, going down to the ankles, and it provides great coverage.  There’s not that much that isn’t modest about it.

This skirt has a dark wash, accented with top stitching in threads of jean-gold, white and red.

The only problem that I can see is if it were too long and you were walking on it!

When you look at this skirt, what’s the first thing that comes to your attention?

To me, it’s the pattern—the finish.

As far as modesty goes, the length is terrific, the fit seems decent, and there’s embellishments to make it interesting.

What do you think of the acid wash?

Every woman’s wardrobe should have a denim skirt—and this is a nice one.  It’s just below the knee, so it should keep you cool in the summer days, and covering the knee is even acceptable at Bob Jones University (my alma mater).

That being said, be careful with just covering the knee when sitting, as it can have maintenance issues.

The retailer lets us know that it has a low waist, so you’ll want to make sure that you have a good, long top.

Other than that, the pictures look good.

This skirt sits just below the knee—and that means that it’s modest, but sitting could cause some maintenance issues.

Black is a great, multi-purpose color.

The buttons that run down the front could mean that there’s issues of gaping, except the site claims that these are mock buttons—so that shouldn’t cause the same issue.

Did I ever tell you about the time I went on a dating out at college with a girl that was wearing a button down, full length, straight, denim skirt…

In any case, there are two pockets, and this skirt looks like it’d be a good one to have—better move quickly, because there’s only one left!

Here’s a Black Denim skirt up for review.  The length is great, coming down to mid-calf…  I’d almost call this lower calf.  The bottom flairs out, and it looks like it has a little wear at the knees.

The description says that it has a modest back slit—slits are always something of which you should always take note.

The decorative portion is nice, and draws the attention lower.  The skirt also has pockets.

About the only thing that I can caution you about here is whether the skirt would be to tight on the lower abdomen.  Be careful that material doesn’t make it hard to walk in or that it would show too much because it was tight.

Otherwise, this seems like a great modest skirt.

I’ve only seen a few of these types of skirts “in the wild.”  The idea is pretty straightforward:

The top part of the skirt looks like a jean mini-skirt, except there’s a whole lot more  fabric.

In this case, the bottom is velvet, and it’s decorated.  The decorative belt is actually stitched on the skirt, so it doesn’t move around.  There’s embroidery and gemstones.

In my male mind, looking at this skirt causes my brain to puzzle.  Obviously, if the skirt was just the jean part, no modest woman would wear it.

Does the contrast cause it to be a tease?  Will a mind think about what it would be like if it were “the real skirt”?

The Mocha Flora Denim Skirt is the match for the Mocha Flora Denim Jacket.  How can I tell?  Isn’t it obvious?

They’re both blue!

Just kidding.  Besides the name, what tips me off is the embroidered floral pattern at the hemline of the skirt.

The skirt is plenty long, it has pockets, but they aren’t a problem.

Overall, I don’t have a problem, as far as modesty goes, with either the skirt or the jacket.

This is your typical jean skirt.  There’s the pockets, the opening, and it opens at the bottom.  Then length is great as far as modesty goes—unless you’re like my kids and think modestly means not showing your ankles!  (They got it from school during a study on the pilgrims.)

In any case, there is some detailing, but it’s minor and it’s on the double pleat on each side of the front bottom.

This type of skirt is a must have in a skirt-wearing woman’s wardrobe, and this is a highly versatile and modest option.

This skirt from DCM Apparel is a whole 34” long.  It has no slits and a drawstring bottom and waist band.

What’s nice about this skirt is that it isn’t heavy—weighing in at only 1 lbs.—until you add things to to pockets.

That’s right, this cargo skirt has pockets a plenty, but it is still maintains its modesty, as it is ankle length.

I don’t know what you think about skirts with pockets, but this one does look sharp in black.
