It’s true, I’m fat. I’m OK with that, I truly am. I don’t feel bad about myself because I am blessed to live in a country where our biggest worry is having too much food to eat. I don’t hate my body because it’s rounder and plusher than a supermodel’s and my husband doesn’t hate it either.

That is, I don’t hate it most of the time.

Then I went dress shopping for ZuZu’s First Communion. As you may have read last time, ZuZu decided to wear an heirloom dress, that just left my 15 year old daughter, Dell, and me looking for dresses. Only she gave up pretty quickly on finding a dress she liked that covered both her chest and her rear and opted to have an old dress tailored to fit her better. I didn’t have that option. My husband was wearing his Great (or formal) kilt and the girls and I are wearing our sashes that come in the family tartan. This left a great many colors; yellow, blue, green, red- but not too many prints. At one point, we gave up on the sash and doubled my dress budget. Anything. My husband just didn’t want to see me leave another store in tears.

I have never felt so ugly in my life as I did shopping this Easter season. I wanted a dress that was feminine, maybe a little frilly or lacy, and not black. I’ll confess to you all here that I didn’t care about modesty while I was trying on clothing. Now, I’d never buy an immodest dress to wear- especially not to church! My self esteem had taken such a hit though, that I tried on any dress that wasn’t ugly. I figured it would not do me any harm at this point to put on a dress and say “This is too sexy/ revealing/ inappropriate/ etc” and show my husband and have him agree. Instead, I just felt worse and worse. Even the stuff that fit looked stupid on me.

Basically, dresses fell into two categories.

First, there were the modest dresses that we inflated versions of misses dresses. They looked ridiculous on me. Honestly, it looked like I was trying to wear the same dresses as ZuZu. I’m a large woman and I don’t look good in a high waisted dress with a poofy skirt. To add insult to injury, there was a little ribbon sash that tied around the thickest part of my waist and a little bolero sweater that cut off my figure some more. It looked so pretty and perfect on the hanger, but on me- ludicrous! But I wanted one so much it bordered on coveting…

Second, there were the sexy clothes. They were just as absurd as the modest dresses, only tighter, shorter, and lower cut. They gaped in weird spots and pinched in others. And if I were to box at the altar- everything would be exposed! How on earth would I be able to lead the First Communicants in their song if I couldn’t raise my arms? And who would want to stand in front of second graders wearing this? (Which I can assure you was about 3-4 inches shorter on me!) I walked out of my favorite plus size store with tears in my eyes. It was all I could do to keep it together until I got my girls in the van. The last thing I wanted was my beautiful daughters seeing me cry because I felt ugly. I believe my exact words were “I feel like I’m too fat to live.” This is silly since I fit into the dresses, but they were cut for girls Dell’s age.

What’s a girl to do when the mall lets her down? Internet shopping of course! I was worried because I felt I was running out of time. If I ordered something online and it fit like the stuff in the stores, would I have time to return it and try something new? On the other hand, what other choice did I have?

I’d been looking at a certain site that a few of my modest Facebook friends “liked”. They have skirts and dresses from size S-5X, but they are best known for their plus sizes! To make it better, on their Facebook page customers are encouraged to post photos of themselves in the clothes and describe size and style. So before I bought, I could see what the style looked like on a real woman. On each dress’s information page, the company listed the measurements of the dress- including the armhole openings! (If you are plus size yourself, you understand what a bonus that is!) I settled on a sleeveless sundress, Forest green, with green embroidery. I personally don’t mind sleeveless as long as undergarments are completely covered, but I don’t wear sleeveless to church so I bought a black shrug to go over it. Looking at the pictures online, I was a little nervous it might be too low cut, but on me it wasn’t. (Why do designers assume that making something sexier makes it more appealing? But that’s a different article!) It’s everything I wanted in a dress- long, feminine, flowy, and matches our tartan! Nope, there’s no picture- but there will be next week after the big day!

By the way-I’m ordering another dress from them this week.

We all have an angle, a voice that gets our emotional attention. What voice is calling your name?

For so long, my voice I ran to was clearance…target red tags particularly! I walk the aisles for hours, scanning the target red-orange tag, searching the end caps, drawn to the 50-75% off signs. CLEARANCE….I can’t resist….I must come…I must see…I must know…it may be a great deal…I might need it…I may never find it at the price again…It could work…I could use it….Save it for a gift…You always need one…If I wait I will have to pay full price….It’s such a deal…It could go in that empty space…I’ve been looking for just that…She would like that…It could help him…That would work.

Before I know it, I have $50 -$100 worth of stuff in my cart. I didn’t come to buy, didn’t need it right at that moment, and wasn’t looking for. How can IT happen again and again?

It’s my patterns. Habits of life are known and common. Negative habits tend to be selfish, greedy, lustful, and a pleasure-seeking, sinful heart. Sin –that ancient word… repulsive… voided… hidden… un-repented… gripping… It clutches my soul hoping to hold on, to bring me down, and to never let me go.

And in its realization I cry out,

”Oh, God! Let me hear from you!”

“May I be tuned to your frequency, your still and quiet voice! In your presence, seeking You: my Inheritance, Incorruptible, without a blemish, Perfect, indestructible, All-powerful, All-knowing, Eternal. Let me follow You!!!! I want to answer Your call! You, and You alone!”

There, I will find rest. Along with joy, peace, love, fulfillment, grace, forgiveness, and self-control. There–may I die to my flesh and live to God!

Who or What is calling you? Take time to pause, and let God seek your heart. And share with others, because none of us is the only sinner; we all share weaknesses and can learn from the honesty of one another.

Have you been shopping lately? Are you tired of necklines the expose too much skin? Why did people decide that it was a good idea to wear two shirts in order to not show cleavage? Times are changing, finally!

I went shopping with my teenage daughter last week in a mall. We are not mall-shoppers; We spend more time window shopping. As we stroll, I roll my eyes away and say comments that pop in my head. I am sure I am every teenage daughter’s dream mall companion. While the lengths of skirts, dresses and shorts are still mini in most stores, we couldn’t help but notice a delightful new trend in necklines.

Thankfully, my daughter and I have a good relationship. Therefore, she puts up with my editorial comments, and she encourages me to move along.

“Where could she go looking like that?” I question about a mannequin. And then my eye moves one by one through the row of tube tight dressed mannequins wrapping in bright colors.

We laugh. We whisper. I sense her mood. And then on to the next window. Some stores we avoid.

(Why can I not pass that pink lingerie store without wishing I could lead an “Occupy The Mall” until it closed it doors? I wonder if most mothers feel this way.)

As we enjoy our time together, I can’t help being thankful for the way my daughter is growing up. I am glad our taste in clothes aligns. It is not that my teen daughter and I dress alike – what a pity that would be for both of us!

When we finally arrived to the last store window in the mall, she cheerfully declares, “I could wear any outfit in this window. I like the look. It’s me. When I get older, I will buy my clothes from here.” So I suggested we should take a walk through the store, and she was willing. (Oh, I didn’t tell you… she doesn’t like shopping, especially for clothes and never wants to try anything on in a dressing room.)

On every rack and stand, she found something she would wear. I turned my head, scanning the tops and dresses. I saw something I haven’t seen in years: the necklines aren’t plunging. “Now that is a nice change! Look, you won’t have to wear two shirts or a camisole,” I note. She is equally relieved.

Her eyes rest on a soft medium pink top with four small photo-like silver-grey scenes of Paris. It is romantic, subtle, with enough detail for interest. She lights up as she shows me several more items that she would enjoy, and every single piece has an appropriately modest neckline!

“Can I help you find anything?” inquires a young lady.

“It is about time!” I tell the sales clerk, explaining how much I like the new necklines. She nods knowingly, commenting on how she has been buying several of the new styles for her own wardrobe.

We have something to celebrate in 2012, “Rising Necklines!” Shopping for shirts and dresses will be so much easier. I am so thankful for this change. I am sure many of you will be too!

I’m looking to start a new feature, and this one is a lot of fun!

I’m looking for someone who likes to look through items that retailers have to offer, and can put together items of the same type across different sites.

Something like:

5 Modest Little Black Dresses

4 Long Length Camisoles

10 Dresses you’ll love to own.

With links, prices, and comments I think it’d be a fun way to comparison shop.

I’m looking for this to be a weekly feature, so it’s not too big of a time commitment.

Do I have any takers?

Well, is it? Something that I’ve had to come to the realization of every time I approach this topic is that modesty has to come from the inside before it can be manifest on the outside. If it’s not in the heart, if it’s not the true desire of the person, then they can dress in whatever they want and still be immodest.

Frankly, it’s not so much the clothing as it is the attitude and the desire to bend the rules. The teenage girl that goes out to the store and buys an appropriate length skirt but does not have it in her to be modest will find herself rolling up the waistband once she’s out of sight of her parents.

You see, as we’ve said before, what manner of person you are on the inside reflects on the outside. Now, modesty and chastity are linked in many ways, and there is a difference. I like the way Cindy explained it when she quoted C.S. Lewis:

The Christian rule of chastity must not be confused with the social rule of “modesty” (in one sense of that word); i.e., propriety, or decency. The social rule of propriety lays down how much of the human body should be displayed and what subjects can be referred to, and in what words, according to the customs of a certain social circle. Thus, while the rule of chastity is the same for all Christians at all times, the rule of propriety changes. A girl in the Pacific islands wearing hardly any clothes and a Victorian lady completely covered in clothes might both be equally “modest,” proper or decent, according to the standards of their own societies: and both, for all we could tell by their dress, might be equally chaste (or unchaste).

We’re all told to live chaste lives– lives that are pure and holy before God. We’re also under obligation not to attract attention to our bodies. The exhortations of 1 Peter would seem foolish if the context of the times were taken out of them. For example, the braiding of hair, wearing of gold, or putting on of fine apparel can easily be linked to those women who had a less than virtuous profession. Peter’s not arguing here that you should not take care of yourself, but that your inside is more important than your outside.

And that’s exactly the point. We should be people (women AND men) that are chaste people, a people concerned about the inner man more so than we are the outer.

In my mind, modesty and chastity are in a threefold band with humility. All three travel together and they all influence each other. Humility does not seek to exalt itself. It will evidence itself by modest clothing and modest speech. Chastity will see out purity, and so will try to hold itself to a higher standard– which will also result in clean living and modest attire.

Because it’s more than modest clothes– I mean, if you read that survey you’ll see that it’s not just clothing! It’s movement, how you sit, how you walk, how you bend over, when you stretch, how you step over something and how you run! It almost would seem that you could do absolutely nothing without possibly causing a brother to stumble!

Which is precisely why I think that the emphasis needs to be on the heart. The heart attitude to seek after God. The heart to do the best that you can to help your brother. The heart that desires to edify one another. And it also means that you have a heart that does not look for opportunities to lust. A heart that remains focused on things above. It really does go both ways.

We’ve talked a lot about modesty. The problem is that finding a hard and fast definition of exactly what is modest is a hard thing to do. Depending on who you are, what you are, and where you were raised makes a big difference in how you interpret what you see and what you think is modest.

Lauren, at Chastity Online, had this initial reaction when she thought about modesty and the Christian life:

I remember hearing this term used for the first time and thinking “Oh no. Now i have to dress like an Amish farm girl with a skirt down to my ankles and long sleeves.”

She goes on to say that she’s not currently dressing like that, but that was the thought. So, what are some rules that men and women think of when they think modest apparel, and what can we learn from it?

The Hand Rule

Emily from the Unfurling Flower gives this advice:

Another principle I have found helpful to guide me when I’m dressing is to say that it shouldn’t really be an issue for a male friend to place a hand (in an appropriate way) on any parts of flesh that are left bare. This can be useful when deciding on whether a top is appropriate or too low or if a skirt is too short, for example. Now, I’m not suggesting you all must use this principle – as for some girls, it may not prove to be helpful at all – and I am fully aware that it doesn’t deal with other immodesty issues such as clothing being too tight/see-through/etc. I just think it’s something else interesting to consider if you are a bit unsure of whether something covers you up enough, which often works for me :).

The Modesty Survey

In a culture that promotes immodesty and promiscuity, it is our obligation to be counterculture and show the world how to be truly respected and that comes by us respecting ourselves by the way we dress and act. -Lauren

The guys over at The Rebelution did a great job at creating a survey and asking men for what they thought was modest. Here is the overview of their results:

1.7% of the guys surveyed feel strongly that girls shouldn’t show their calves. Is it now Burkha Day for all well-meaning Christian women? Absolutely not! In reading through the survey, you might have trouble finding a single item of clothing that someone, somewhere, doesn’t have a problem with. So where do we draw the line?

Well, the fact is that 98.3% guys DO NOT feel strongly that girls shouldn’t show their calves. If you look at the survey results you will find that 99.9% of the guys take full responsibility for themselves, and don’t expect women to cover every inch of skin — they’re just asking for help.

What you will see here is that no matter the category, some man labeled it immodest:

Denim jackets with faded sections on the chest draw too much attention to the bust- Survey says, 31.9% agree.

Showing bra-straps, even unintentionally is a stumbling block- Survey says 57.4% agree.

Tank tops are generally immodest- Survey says 57.6% agree.

Sleeveless shirts or dresses (bare arms) are immodest- Survey says 21% agree.

V-neck shirts or dresses are a stumbling block, even if they are not revealing- Survey says 34.4% agree.

Shirts with messages across the front draw too much attention to the bust- Survey says 47% agree.

Modesty vs. Fashion

I don’t know how many times that I’ve heard someone express the frustration with current fashion and their desire to be modest. No woman (or man for that manner) wants to be out of the times– in some ways that draws even more attention than wearing what the world does! At the same time, since modesty and fashion are at odds, there seems to be less outlets to get something that is both modern and modest.

The relationship between fashion and modesty appears to be straightforward, even immutable. Fashion is the constant enemy of modesty. The former seeks to attract attention, notice, and comment. The latter, by contrast, is the rejection of such theatrics. Modesty in dress is about turning oneself out with consideration for occasion, taste, and economy.

–snip–

A piece of clothing, though, is just a piece of clothing. It does not become an expression of modesty or immodesty until it is worn. A long skirt paired with a long-sleeved shirt covers the body, but they must be worn with the intention of modesty. Consider the flowing, tiered skirts of yesteryear’s hippies, which were often worn with a loose, long-sleeved shirt in the same style. A woman in such an outfit would have most of her skin hidden, but this costume of the 1970s was intended to attract notice. Modesty was for fuddy-duddies, and even though the style wasn’t revealing, it challenged the existing culture of dress. Such outfits communicated inclusion in the youth-friendly counterculture, whose fashion message might be summed up as: “No sweater-sets and pearls for me.”

Is the Clothing the Real Problem?

It’s often not the skin that is the problem as much as the ability to see what shouldn’t be seen. I believe that all temptation can be partially traced to the same root that tempted Eve– the forbidden. If something is forbidden, then we want it– and when it comes to the lust of the flesh, it’s the suggestion that I may see something that I shouldn’t be seeing that’s the stumbling block.

As for the wearer, the real problem is in the heart attitude rather than what the person is wearing. Any individual item of clothing can be worn in such a way that it is immodest or modest. What is reflected, however, is what the wearer wants to be seen.

Lila is a single woman that works in a help center for a company called “metromart”. She is completely self-absorbed, has a shoe blog, and tries to get by with as little work as possible. She hangs out with her two friends, and is trying to attract a guy.

In the following panel, she’s met a guy and is about to go out on a date…

The point of this comic? Clothing sends a message. What you wear says something to those that see you. In the case of Lila, her friend is saying (in a sarcastic fashion) that her clothing says that she’s desperate.

What does what you are wearing say about you?

One of the most difficult things to address in terms of modesty and what to wear is the fact that fashion and what society wears changes over time. We’ve previously discussed the concept that men have not always worn pants, and the cultural bearing on what we wear, but I’d like to look deeper into what’s going on in our world today.

The Sexualization of Society

I find it interesting that the very first thing that happened when Adam and Eve of the Bible fell was that they found out that they were naked. Certainly this had to be a strange thing for them– they probably expected to die from eating the fruit, but instead they were overcome with shame and wanted to cover their bodies.

From that time until this, people have had a natural desire to hide their shame and cover their bodies. Now, granted, each time period has things that they want to show, for different purposes at different times, but that doesn’t stop the natural inclination to cover up.

There has been, through time, clothing that indicates the intent of the heart. As early as Jacob and Tamar we see that if a woman covered herself and wore a veil that it signified that she was a prostitute looking for “work”.

Today we have seen sexual desire– a very powerful and good thing within marriage– being used to sell beer, cigarettes, auto loans, Internet domain names, and even used to get people to church! It seems that sex sells everything– and it’s gotten to the point that the image of the woman that is baring it all is reinforced from all corners.

Beauty vs. Body

The difference is that every woman is given a body, but not every woman is given true beauty. You see, just like Tamar looked the part of the harlot– which attracted Jacob physically– she could also dress the part of the widow and carry sobriety and reflect her true person.

What you wear has the effect of telegraphing the message of what you are inside. Just like the bride’s gown shows that she’s about to or just has gotten married, what you wear and how you carry yourself have a big impact on what you are advertising– more so than you would imagine.

You see, to me, a lot of the conversation in this area has to do with “how long a skirt should I wear”, “how tight is too tight” and “does this blouse go down too far.” Those are really the wrong questions. For one thing, if it’s so close that you’re asking, don’t wear it! Secondly, a lot of things that could be borderline can cross simply by who you are on the inside.

This is why you get questions like “Can Pants be Considered Modest?” The answer is more obvious than is seems– it depends on who the woman is that is filling them.

Attitude is Half the Battle

Take, for instance, this picture on the right. By all accounts this could be considered to be a modest top. The sleeves are capped so no shoulder is showing. There’s no obvious cleavage, though it does show a lot of chest. This would be borderline in my book.

And yet look at her eyes and her face. Obviously this is the look the woman was going for– a “come hither” look. And that’s what makes something that could be considered borderline go over the edge. Now this picture says to me that the girl is teasing, and is going too far.

But I’m Just Trying to Stay in Fashion!

Have you ever really taken a look at what’s coming down the runways. I’m sure there must be a blog somewhere poking fun at some of the more ridiculous things that people wear that’s declared high fashion. Some of it I’m sure they’re only able to squeeze into once!

But I know what you’re saying. No woman (or man for that matter) wants to look like his clothes are frumpy. However, we must have these things in mind when looking at clothing:

They’re selling clothes to make women think they are sexy. They are selling the tease.

They do not care whether or not you are modestly dressed, whether it fits, or what body parts are displaying. They are interested in sales.

We must search for things that are modest without question.

If we keep these things in mind, and cultivate a pure heart, we will be radiating the beauty from within– and any attention that we get will go to the One that made us.

What are you wearing? No, seriously, stop to think about what you are wearing and how you chose the outfit you are wearing today and how you select what you will wear from the store.

What we wear says a lot about who we want people to think that we are. The colors, styles and fit say more about us than we think– even if it says that we don’t think! Because your clothing is what you are wearing at any given point in time, and since most of us have chosen what to wear since we were at least a teenager, we pick how we face the world.

Come with me as we take another look at a series I originally wrote last year with fresh eyes as we talk modesty and clothing.

It’s been a while since the Carnival of Modesty has gone live, but we mean to change that!

Please note, this carnival uses Blog Carnival for the source of blog posts—please feel free to submit any post you have on the topic! However, if your post doesn’t fit in with this site (as almost all of them did not this time around), it will not be included in the carnival.

Also, the carnival organizer may add blog posts that fit the topic, as I’ll do today.

Without further ado, here’s today’s carnival:

What is Modest

Andrew Q presents Quit Playing Games posted at Baha’i Perspectives.

Sensuality vs. Biblical Beauty-Paul Washer

Modesty: where did it go?

Why Dress Modestly?

Gwen Mangelson presents Paper Expressions: PROM PHOTO, And Today’s Topic! posted at Paper Expressions.

Importance of Being Modest

And that will rap it up for today’s carnival. Be sure to get some posts in for the next carnival—the due date is January 31, 2009, and the post will be February 2nd!

Jaime Stephens, the owner of Molly’s Clothing was gracious enough to send us two items from her company for us to try and review. She sent us the Mini Camisole and the Mini Midriff, which are both from their “Mini” line. Due to the size I wasn’t able to wear these a lot to test them out. However, from the moment I opened the package and from the little bit I did wear them, I could tell that Molly’s is a quality company, selling quality clothing.

The items were packaged beautifully, all tied up in a pink ribbon and wrapped in polka-dotted tissue paper. I appreciated this little extra touch of “specialness”. Very classy!

I tried the Mini Camisole first and was really impressed! Unlike a lot of camisoles from even “modest” companies, this actually came up high enough in the front that I would be comfortable wearing it. It was trimmed at the bottom with pretty, soft lace and elastic that keeps it from “riding up”. The fabric is a non-fading, very stretchy lycra. It may not breath especially well in hot weather, but that is off-set by the fact that it’s only a “half-cami” so it might actually be cooler than a full-length cotton one! The fabric is also a little bit heavy, but that seems like a good thing to me. It would be hard to accidentally poke a hole in it or have it wear out fast since it seems to be a nice quality fabric.

The Mini Midriff was also very nice! Again, the fabric is very good quality, with an elastic waistband. I think this would work especially well for people who are long-waisted and need a little extra to “lengthen” their shirts. Since I am really short-waisted most of my shirts are long enough to begin with, so this wouldn’t help me as much as other ladies.

The prices on these two items might be a little higher than I would normally buy, having never seen the clothing and not knowing the quality. However, since I have seen how nice these pieces are, I would definitely consider buying some of the “Mini” line especially, since they are so versatile and practical.

Molly’s Clothing carries a great selection of layering pieces classic t-shirts and camisoles, some cute dresses, and a few feminine accessories. I would highly recommend you check them out!
