We have had some previous discussions on color and the effects it can have, and a recent article by Britain’s telegraph seems to back up our discussion on the color red: 

The students then completed a questionnaire which asked them to rate, on a scale of one to nine, how attractive they thought the woman was. They also had to rate her in terms of how likely they thought it was that she would have sex with a man on the first date.

The woman was judged to be most attractive when she was wearing the red top, followed by white, blue and finally green.

She was also judged, by a significant margin, to be most likely to agree to sex when she wore red, followed by blue, green and finally white.

In some ways I find this funny.  Those that believe that clothing is neutral and that it has no effect have to be puzzled at the results of this kind of survey.  However, I’m not sure how much weight one should put in this either.

What I do know is that color and sound have an impact on us on a level that we don’t always recognize—which is why orange is used in fast food places and why muzak plays in elevators. 

We can take away from this survey something obvious—that our clothing choices send out signals, and it’s not just the cut or fit.  But I’m sure everyone already knew that!

Here’s another cute maternity photo that I think works well.  With the placement of her hands, you can tell the focus of the photo is the “bun in the oven” and nothing else.  This mother-to-be is beaming with joy, and we can tell she’s excited.

21 Weeks is also a good time to take a photo—a bump is visible, you’re not to the point where you’re wondering if the baby will ever come (that happens in the mid 30s).

You know what I’ve always wanted to do, and if we have another I might try it.  Take photos of every week you know, that way you can get a whole timeline thing going.  That’d be cool.

Or is that only a cool idea because I’m a guy?

This is a two piece, a skirt and a jacket.  What’s neat is that they have adjustable ties that make it fit better.

The Skirt

From what I can see of the skirt, it looks like it would hit near the ankle, which is well within the guidelines that we generally keep.  It looks like it has plenty of room, and it’s opaque.

The Jacket

The jacket has a nice high neckline,and it has short sleeves.  No big issues there.

Is this red a problem?  That’s left as an exercise for the reader!

Here’s an interesting and bright colored formal dress.  The length here is terrific, going to the floor (watch out that you don’t walk on it!).  The shoulders are covered.

The only area that seems to attract attention is the bust—and that’s because there is a lot of gathering there as well as a beaded accent. 

Combined that with the lower neckline, and on some women this will accent the bust and be a little distracting.

The other thing that I keep noticing is the way that there’s a pleat that goes right down the front middle of the dress—not sure if this works well with the model’s figure, and I know it takes my eyes right back to her bust…

The red is an interesting color for this dress, and it has all the right factors to make it modest:

• The length is decent (looks like it would be right about the knee.
• It’s got a nice neckline that doesn’t show too much.
• It covers the shoulders.

But what about that color?  Is red a problem?

I know that we’ve talked about red in the past, and that some see it as a sign of power or attraction.  How about you?

When we got ready to go to the Fourth of July parade this past year, my wife brought out 2 red shirts for our oldest children.  I was wearing a white shirt with an American Eagle on it that I got from WalMart.  Our daughter was wearing a navy shirt with sparklers on it, and my wife was wearing a red tank top.

What was funny is that, while I like the color red that she was wearing, there was a red shirt someone was wearing at the parade that I liked better.

It’s funny how many different shades of each color there are, and what washing can do to change the color of an item.

And so, in keeping with that, what is the name of the color given to the shirt pictured here?  Do you think this color is modest?

This is a very rich and deep red color that works really well for this model’s skin tone.  I like the design that goes across the front, and that’s what my eye is drawn to.

The neckline is interesting, in that it looks like it’s a faux layered look.

The verse from Songs of Solomon 2:16 is in foil across the flowery design.

Like most t-shirts, it looks a bit tight, but that’s to be expected.

Is it red?  I have a hard time telling persimmon from red.

In any case, red is definitely the attention getter, and the shiny satin definitely will draw attention.

That being said, the neckline is high, the shoulders covered, and the dress is just shy of floor length—so you don’t have to worry about tripping and falling while all eyes are glued to you.

I could see this dress being completed by a nice necklace, and hair down instead of up.

It’s prom time, and if you haven’t already purchased your dress, we here at Is This Modest would like to look at a few dresses being offered by modest retailers both so that you could see what’s out there as well as run some quick reviews on the topic of modest formals.

This first dress is of a “dangerous” color.  Dangerous because it’s red, and we’ve had some good discussion before about whether red is an appropriate color.

A formal is a little different than an every day dress, and this “fire-engine red” dress with “faux diamonds under the bust” is very formal without showing too much skin.

That being the case, the neckline does seem a little low, so there’s a maintenance issue there.  The gathering of the material seems to indicate the dress isn’t too type, but this dress would probably not look good on all body types—sizes are 1-12.

Is This Modest?

justagirl4god: I love how this dress shows that formal does not have to mean immodest. The neckline is nice and high, so I would guess that nothing is going to show even if she bends over to pick something up. The jacket is a nice touch and covers her shoulders well. Also, this image shows that one does not have to have a fancy dress to look good – accessories and hairstyle can create a formal look as well. All up – modest!

MInTheGap: This gown’s top is a great example of a modest formal.  This could even be a strapless gown underneath, but the fabric on her shoulders provides great coverage.  Nice selection!

Is This Modest?

MInTheGap: I never quite understood why people would wear a shirt with that many buttons– and then not button them. In this case, the layering helps the outfit and makes it so too much chest doesn’t show, but your eyes are definitely drawn to that area because of the bright white layer.

Foy: I’ve got to agree with MInTheGap on this one – the eyes are drawn strait to the chest. It doesn’t matter that it’s all covered; it’s where the eyes are.

MInTheGap: Most Halloween costumes for adults are risque– this one is pleasantly not. It’s top is high enough, and it appears to cover the knee. Of course, I’m not quite sure who the guy behind her is supposed to be, but it’s not Mickey.

Erin: I’d prefer a higher neckline, but it seems modest other than that.  But (I’ll be MIn here for a minute)…”the red, especially with the large polka-dots really attracts attention, which might not be very modest”.

MInTheGap: Another strapless dress with long hair. I love the color, and I like the sparkles, but it’s a little low for me. Elegant, but crossing the line into immodest.

Erin: I’m with MIn on this one…I think it’s a beautiful dress! However, between the straplessness and the fact that it’s pretty form-fitting, it’s not modest.

We asked the question about colors and what colors are immodest, and here’s what you said you thought:

The interesting thing is, colors do have more of an effect on us that we believe.  It is believed that orange will make a person want to move on—fast food chains used to use a lot more orange because they wanted you to get done with your meal and move on.  White signals purity, but it also is a fairly translucent material.  White and black were used to symbolize good and bad in Westerns.

But red holds an interesting sway when it comes to colors.  When most people think of a romantic color, they think red.  Valentine’s Day is filled with reds, and red is the color of the rose that you buy when you’re in love.

Turns out red has some other effects on the mind:

[R]esearchers said it appeared they were driven by primal instincts that associate the colour with sex.

The study, carried out at the University of Rochester in the U.S., involved a series of experiments in which men were shown a photo of a ‘moderately attractive’ young woman.

In some cases, the colour of the border framing the picture was changed, in other cases the colour of the woman’s blouse varied. Red, blue, green, grey and white were tested. In all cases, red was judged the most attractive.

The men were much more likely to ask out a woman wearing red. And they estimated they would spend almost twice as much on her as one in blue.

Despite the clear effect, the men insisted colour played little role in their choices, suggesting they were oblivious to the power of red.

And the effect runs both ways, with women believing a man wearing red as attractive as well.

MInTheGap: The first girl’s dress does a decent job of covering for a halter top, the middle’s is too low, and the last is more traditional for a halter. Can’t see how long these dresses go, but they’re mostly showing a lot of skin.

Erin: All three show too much chest and shoulder. Not modest….

MInTheGap: He has a classic look, and actually looks comfortable in the suit. Her dress is an appropriate length, but I feel the front comes too far down. I’m going borderline.

Erin: The man looks great…it is hard to go wrong with a good-fitting suit. However, the lady’s dress is too low, I don’t think spaghetti straps are appropriate outside the house, and I think the dress is a bit form-fitting around the hips.
