This morning I awoke to the both the birds and the rain. An instant smile hit my face as I knew spring was creeping slowly through the window with the rays of sunshine. It is very common for the idea of spring to describe new birth, fresh starts and a sense of rejuvenation, but for many women it means the count down is on to one of the biggest days of their lives. Their wedding day.

This day may have been in your minds since you were old enough to comprehend the thought of a white dress, marrying a handsome man and ultimately living the ever after seen in your favourite princess movie. What I have learnt over the past two years of my marriage is that this day was only the start. I had my day planned down to my earrings and barefoot feet but truly, in all honesty, did not prepare much more then the outward celebration that lasted 24 hours. My husband and I had been best friends since we were 15 and I thought that, when we married at 22, I knew who I was, who he was and how the rest of our lives would pan out. Well, as always, the Lord allowed unexpected emergencies, a crippling family crisis and now, just under two years later, a beautiful baby on the way.

This series is really coming from my walk the past two years. I have had such a desire to seek out the role of women in a marriage and in society, but believe my husband and I would have been much better off if I had started before we were married :) Because of that, I am excited to share with you what I have learnt and the lessons I have been taught to hopefully help you prepare your heart and your life for beyond the big day. Yes, your wedding day is a cause for immense celebration and there have been blogs written here about clothing options for brides and bridesmaids, but let’s together take it one more step further.

Let’s delve into your heart, talk about the reality of marriage, the beauty of being the woman in the relationship, but also the responsibility that being a wife holds and what you need to “put on” before you say your “I do’s”.

A women’s conference that I will be attending this week is having a gala dinner party and it requires a ‘cocktail dress’. Of course, I haven’t had many opportunities in the past 18 years of being a mom to attend fancy parties. So, I dig through my closet to find a dress that might do. A few look like the grandmother of the bride. And several others are loose-fitting tent like dresses. I think I can get away with one that has beading on the neckline, even though the dress designer was totally unaware that a women has a waist or even a shape at all. This dress accommodated my growing clothes size very effectively – if you know what I mean.

I ask my girlfriend what she is wearing and she has an elegant nice fitting dress that she wore to her daughter’s wedding this past summer. I don’t want to spend a lot of money. My dear husband already agreed to the conference price and the split fee for the hotel room.

The Thrift Store Find

I decide to check out one of my favorite places to shop: The Goodwill! All of these stores are different depending on the location. Some carry more of one item then others.

I look around and can’t find evening dresses, so I ask the clerk at the checkout. “Anything we have will be mixed in with the dresses over on that wall,” she informs me. Not expecting to find much, I head to the rack. If you have been to Goodwill you know the majority of the dresses will be from 10-20 years ago, and the most common style is the shapeless loose tent dress in a wide variety of colors and materials – not exactly a dress for a gala event.

I flip quickly through the rack and find a designer dress, Anne Klien, in forest green that is my size! In the dressing room, I have to wiggle a little to g
et the back zipper up, and I am pleasantly surprised that the skirt is flattering but not clinging. The material is simply beautiful, being a light semi-sheer weight lined with satin in the same color. The top fits like a glove and covers my shoulders well.

I simply love it and the price is $7.99!

It has one slight problem: a v-neckline that is very fitting and exposes my cleavage. “The designer must have ran short of material,” I think in jest.

The Fabric Store Search

Well, I am not about to let this dress slip through my hands simply because it needs a little creative redo. I figure a simple piece of matching cloth placed in the v-shape will make it both flattering and appropriate. So, off to the fabric store I head. It can’t be too hard to find a piece of green material so close to March.

Did you ever realize how many hues a color comes in? Lime green, kelly green, Christmas green, mint, blue-green, yellow-green, and this list goes on. After about an hour of walking around four or five aisle of material, I decide to see if another section of the store might have a solution. None of the ribbons are wide enough and no colors match. I get desperate and even look through the felt, but I figure it would make the dress look desperately repaired. Thankfully I move along. I laugh now recalling that I honestly, tried to see if an ostrich feather would suffice.

And then my eyes catches some flowers in a bin that are ready made with pins on the back. Selecting a few that might work, I continue to shop. One aisle has beaded buttons, another has strings of crystal beads. I am intrigued by one of the larger beaded buttons and find a string of matching beads – both having a blend of dark green, medium green and purple that are very flattering to the color tone of the dress.

Armed with an idea I head back to the material and become determined to find some lightweight cloth. In the sheer netting I discover a lovely black cloth with small black sequins in a playful, interesting pattern. Now I am on a roll! I find a piece of green cotton broadcloth to go under the see-through black sequins material and get excited seeing the dress make-over taking shape.

The Final Modest Redo

I am thrilled to show you the before and after photos. I enjoyed working on the dress, and have a special feeling knowing it didn’t just come off a store rack –It is a one of a kind creation! This was so much fun to do, I look forward to my next project!

In the end I had enough material to make a small shoulder scarf adding to the modesty of the outfit. While I spent $20 dollars on the fabric store supplies, I have a beautiful flattering evening dress! I can’t help but look forward to going on a nice dinner date with my husband of 27 years after the conference in my new fancy dress.

If you have a similar experience with redoing a outfit, share how you solved an immodest dilemma in a crafty way. And if you have never tried, you may be pleasantly surprised how rewarding it feels if you give it a try. Look at it this way. If you start with a thrift store priced item, you don’t have to worry if you make a mess of it.

Be adventurous – attempt a thrift store redo!

Perhaps you’re not religious, and yet you’ve made up your mind that you wish to dress modestly. Take heart, you have one of the strongest motives for modesty—because you’ve made a decision apart from what the culture says!

Much like the person that has made the decision for modest reasons, because it’s your choice you are able to resist the external pressures on you to dress immodestly.

Maybe it’s because you value yourself more than your curves. Perhaps it’s because you’ve decided you want to have people look you in the eye when they speak to you. Perhaps you just like the way that wearing a skirt makes you feel like a woman.

For whatever reason, unlike those who dress modestly because they have to, you have a reason—so stick to it!

Shopping retail stores can sometimes be frustrating when you feel like the selection of modest clothes is slim to none.

You don’t want to be limited to only shopping specialty modest clothing stores either, so what is a modest woman to do? With some strategic planning and research, I can show you how to find well-made stylish modest clothes at an affordable price right at your local mall! As a Jewish woman who abides by the laws of modesty in Judaism, much thought goes into my style and dress, so having lots of modest clothing stores to shop at is really helpful!

When the Fall collections hit the stores, shopping for modest clothing definitely gets a bit easier. With colder weather comes the need for more coverage, and thus your modest clothes shopping selection expands. This is a great time to do major shopping and stock up on some essential wardrobe items while taking advantage of all the Holidays sales.

The key is to shop stores that cater to a more conservative or professional target customer as they tend to offer a more modest selection of tops, bottoms, skirts, and dresses. These stores will have a much greater selection of quality modest clothes for you to choose from making your shopping experience stress-free and enjoyable!

Let’s take a look at some great modest clothing store options where you can can find affordable modest clothes to help kick your Fall style into high gear!

New York and Company and Anne Taylor are two great examples of business professional focused apparel stores.

With this time of year there are so many fun clothing options that I have really only dipped under the surface!

This autumn is time for long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, long pants and the like but for our last day here I want to address the great fall accessories.

BAGS! This time of year these are a must! You may be a mother carting around more then your share of gear or a single lady off to work, but this weather leaves everyone watching the skies. To combat this is the all-time motto, be prepared. With umbrellas, jackets, shades and more you really should find yourself a colourful tote to, yes, tote around all that stuff. Check out great online stores like C28 (reviewed here before) and take a peek at their bag sections. Now, when you leave the house, you can be confident that you have all you need to battle some of the unpredictable factors of life.

The next accessory the fall brings in with the changing of the leaves, are scarves. I know I have mentioned these in the past but now you can go big. Large, non-silky scarves, wrapped multiple times are such a comfort against the autumn breeze. They can bring colour, texture and unique flavour to any outfit and even take some outfits from day to evening. They add a touch of class when you are zipping out the home, rushing kids to school or off on an errand run. Find brightly coloured fabrics which then allow you to wear a more plain palette in your clothing keeping it quick, easy and simple!

Thank you for sharing your time with me at the beginning of this fall season! Yes, today is the first day of autumn and the last day of this series! What do you have in store for yourself and your family this season?

Now, you may be saying to yourselves, “chunky sweaters, jeans, leaves, apple-picking, all wonderful fall things but I have work, church, parent teacher interviews…” This is where the autumn dress ideas come in!

I love what you will be finding in the shops this fall as they are modest, flowing and warm. From the picture above you will see the dresses are all falling below the knee and this is the shortest they will really be going this season, if anything you will find maxi/floor length! What spectacular news for the modest moms, working ladies or those of you who plain enjoying dressing up a tad!

The length as well as the long sleeves make them weather appropriate, and instead of socks and ankle boots you can always throw on some thicker panty-hose to seal the warmth deal (my mother would need to). The necklines are also high this year, leaving us modest ladies little to worry about! The colours are beautiful as are the fabrics, making this a very feminine dress idea we can all easily find and get on without much hassle.

The ankle boots to pair with the dresses are one of the accessories I adore and I have a few pairs still lying around from last winter. They are wonderful in the snow, leaves, mud, you name it they can handle it! I find the ones with no heel especially inviting as I am the same height as my husband ‘sans shoes’ and therefore do not feel like buying heels ever. Have fun with these modest dress types, cinched at the waist for a feminine touch and then topped off with a pair of grandma’s ankle boots and thick warm socks (preferably your own)…sigh, cozy bliss! Oh, and remember those chunky sweaters, well it is alright to grab one of those as you head out the door to keep the draft away between home and your destination. Sweater or cardy will do, just stay warm!

I have been quite impressed with what the fashionistas are pulling out this season, even though I know the cold weather has something to do with the longer lengths and higher necks. But, that’s alright, as long as they are heading modest for fall, we will take what we can when we can!

This second wardrobe basic for fall is something I have chatted about in my previous series, but it is actually coming more into the fashion trends for fall as the weather is cooling down.

This clothing item is something I have had in my closet for years and even asked my Dad for his hand me downs or shopped around at the local second hand shop for them. Are you able to guess…? The bulky sweater! Yes, think Dr. Huxtable from ‘The Cosby Show’.

Loose-fitting, hand-knitted, comfy-cozy sweaters. These are way into modest territory and what a relief, as there is not much anymore in the modest category that can be found at your stores.

The tip to these is get comfortable! There is nothing more delighting then throwing on a sweater that has hardly any shape to it, and therefore you’re not dealing with nagging thoughts on what skin is showing or what curve is bulging. How liberating!

With the jeans fashion going wide-legged, it makes a perfect match to a baggy sweater…or cardigan. Don’t forget those great grandfather cardigans! If you want more info on those check out this past article!

Another tip about this fall modest style is do not buy these full price. You can find them at any local second hand shop or your father’s closet (if he is willing to part with them).

Final tip with these sweaters, it really is the chunkier the better. Many of us may remember the turtle neck winters where the tighter the sweater the better, but thankfully this is not it. Grab the large knit, toss a tank on underneath for more warmth and jump in those leaves you have just raked.

Welcome!

I am excited to write this article as what I am about to conclude as one of my fall basics for any wardrobe is definitely my favourite item of clothing all year round. Can you guess what it is?…a great pair of jeans! Do understand that this entire series is a group of opinion articles and if you are a woman who feels pants are off limits due to her own modesty beliefs then this is obviously not a fall must have. :)

But for those of us who do not feel convicted regarding wearing trousers, what could be better for romping around the leaves in then comfortable denim? I own many different styles of jeans but thankfully that is just preference, and I will not push one style over another. The good news is that this fall season wide legged and flared jeans are coming back into style. This will make it easier for any of the women out there who did not feel comfortable in the skinny style that has made itself a permanent resident in our local stores lately. That ‘70s vibe is slowly filtering back into the fashion world meaning it should be on our shop shelves again shortly!

For those jeans that have a low-waisted fit check out these tips for keeping your midriff cozy from the chill!

I feel the only concern with jeans, or pants of any kind for that matter, is the fit on your backside. This is another fine line that can be sometimes crossed unintentionally. Take for example church yesterday. I was late getting up and quickly grabbed my wide legged jeans and a button down dress shirt, which I tucked in. I had not worn these jeans in a few months as the cooler weather has only recently made an appearance. My husband and I had a coffee together before jumping in the car and heading to our church service. As we walked in and I stood for the first worship song I was suddenly aware of the people behind me and my bum. My jeans felt a bit too snug and of course we were sitting in the second row from the front. I put my hands around my back to try and cover what I could as I was keenly uncomfortable.

This is what happens when I do not do an overall check before leaving the house. I was not consciously thinking modesty and assumed that the jeans would be fine as they were wide legged and everything was covered. So, even though jeans are not skin showers they can still be immodest when not fitted properly. So take your time when sorting through the jean racks and make sure you try them on before purchasing to save money and the time of returning too tight jeans!

In conclusion, no matter what style of jeans you find yourself leaning towards, whether it be a hippie flare, punk rock skinny, cowboy boot-cut or ’70’s wide legged, throw them on with a poncho or fitted leather jacket and head into the windy weather for some fall apple picking fun!…Just watch the fit on your bum so you keep the other apple pickers eyes on the apples and not your apple-bottoms!

What is your go-to style of jeans? Do you only buy a certain shape? Love to hear your thoughts and we will see you tomorrow for more wardrobe basics for fall!

Summer is finally here! The season of picnics, uber-hot weather…and lots of skin. During these months girls like me wonder how to be modest while beating the heat.

I often hear the “If you’ve got it, flaunt it!”, “It’s the guy’s problem if he can’t control himself!”, “I can dress however I want, it’s my right!” arguments, even from Christian females. 1 Timothy 2:9 says differently “I want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety” and so does Romans 14:13 “Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” Ladies, immodest dress dishonors God, your future husband if you’re called to be married, your brothers in Christ, and causes guys to think impure thoughts.

Guys are wired so very much by what they see. Immodest dress is a stumbling block to them and an obstacle to godly guys’ extremely difficult battle to keep their minds and hearts pure. It causes our brothers in Christ, even the strongest in their faith, to stumble over us, having to try to get the image out of their mind, keep from dwelling on it, try not to look at it (which is hard to do if you are talking to them), keep their focus on God during church and other times, and many other things. It’s not right of us girls to do, especially when we’re their fellow believers and should know better! Guys are bombarded by immodest sights and girls everyday! Ultimately it doesn’t matter whether we’re called to be married or not because we should committ to modesty out of love for God and fellow believers.

Modesty is not about frumpiness or hiding your body shape. It is 100% possible to dress modestly and totally be rocking stylish clothes! The ground rules are to cover your cleavage, thighs, stomach {basically your whole torso}, make sure your bra straps don’t show, have your feminine figure enhanced a little but not too much, and nothing tight! Now, for some tips that will keep you cool and modest in summer! :))

Light fabrics: Cotton, linen, and similar fabrics are essential. You don’t want some heavy or tight fabrics weighing you down and making you hotter!

Wide strap tank tops – If you choose to wear tank tops. Go for wide straps preferably 2-3 inch straps and keep camis/spaghetti strap tops for layering. Make sure the tanks aren’t low and your bra straps won’t show.

Bermuda, cotton, or linen shorts. Look for knee-length, not immodest short shorts. Too much l-egg there. :P Make sure though that they don’t hike up when you sit down.

Skirts/Dresses. Contrary to popular belief, showing skin doesn’t make you cooler, it helps your skin burn even more! Flowy skirts and dresses are very modest and my favorite summer wear. They help the skin to breathe and air to flow. Again, make sure that they won’t hike up when you sit down.

Swimwear: Never a bikini. And a so-called tankini has a top that could potentially flip up. :P If you can afford it, I’d recommend something from modestkini, simply modest swimwear, or wholesome wear. If not, just pair swim shorts with a modest one-piece that’s not very low and covers the whole torso, like this cute delia’s suit!

Eat light. Salads, sandwiches, fruit and cheese, stuff like that, just not anything heavy. Heavy foods will make you feel weighed down. Microwave, prepare ahead the night before, grill {if possible}, crockpot, cook at night, or eat cold foods to keep heat out of the house and off of you.

By the way, if you have spaghetti-strap tops or dresses you want to wear, pair them with short-sleeve or to-the-elbow sweaters. There are cute ones that come out for summer, you just have to check. And if a top/dress is low-cut but definitely cute, pair it with a higher-cut tank or cami! Layering can work in the summer if done right!

Wondering where to find these awesome clothes that cover? I’d suggest Old Navy, J. Crew, Forever 21, fashionable thrift stores and similar places. Old Navy always has cute or modest tops, skirts, and knee-length shorts and so does J. Crew. Shop the stores you like to find these clothes and support the ones that do have them. :))

Guys, you should also dress modestly too. Especially if you have a relatively muscular body, cover that up, because girls {including me} can get…sort of…sometimes…excited. :D

A few outfits to share {click on pics to go to the polyvore links}:

{Bright and very summery}

{Good shorts! The top does look a little low so if it’s too hot to wear the
coverup then put a cami or even strapless top underneath}

{The suits’ tops and the first pair of shorts are too low/short for me, but the idea’s great!}

Remember, do everything to the glory of God, and have some fun while doing that! :D

Much love, your grilled burger-adoring, sometimes skirt-wearing, author who has decided she’s gotta learn to swim sometime soon.

Alright! Welcome back :). This is part 2 of the t-shirt series and the topic I’ll try and dissect today is one that tippy toes a very fine line. Tightness.

You walk around any mall, down any main street or maybe even peek into your own mirror and you will see t-shirts. It has become a quintessential part of most of North America’s wardrobe, male and female. I am personally for tees, as I mentioned in the previous article, but what has been troubling me lately is the fit. I find myself more attentive to women’s modesty or immodesty since I have been blogging about the subject. What I have noticed is that a lot of t-shirts make me, as a woman, feel quite uncomfortable. I am not talking about the sleeve length or neck line at this point but just on the form fitting side of things. I am not sure how some women feel they are dressing modestly when their t-shirt leaves little to the imagination as it appears ‘plastered on’. I am not one who can be excused from this group and I have recently done a bit of a clean out of my own drawers.

The concern here ladies is where the eye goes immediately. I know it seems unfair but size upstairs does make a difference in this subject which is why it makes it all the trickier. Women who are smaller chested are not as plagued by this issue as often times even a size small does not give any extra definition. But the larger busted women have a much tougher time finding a fit that does not accentuate what our world obsesses over.

It DOES make a difference though! You may be covering it all but really you are just creeping up to the modesty line and not making an effort to cross over into the territory.

I am calling on you to go above and beyond where modesty is concerned. Covering it all doesn’t cut it ladies and I speak to myself in all this as well. Just because your ‘ladies’ aren’t hanging out does not mean a man can’t tell exactly what they would like if they were.

At the majority of today’s stores tees are ‘built to fit’…and really fit. What that calls on us to do is to make an effort, like buying one size up if it still fits well in the shoulders. Now may be a good time to stock up on some tees as there is a bit of a ‘loosey-goosey’ style happening. I personally love the Joe Fresh line found at local Zehrs food stores. They have cute shirts that cover it all but also have a great fashion forward lose fit. Check out the link to find a store near you as they do not yet sell online (Grrrr)

Just watch that neckline which we will get up close and personal with in our next article :)

In 2009, we asked the readers of this site why they have chosen modesty. In these posts we’ll share with you the reasons that they chose modesty as an encouragement to you in your decisions as well as a challenge to uphold each other.

Can you give us a brief biography?

I grew up in a dysfunctional family. My dad was a pornography addict and pretty much neglected my mom and his kids even though he lived in the house with us (but most of the time he was just the man on the couch you didn’t want to get mad). My mom is a devoted woman of God who taught us all about the importance of following Christ with our whole lives. She taught me all about modesty but I tended to be rebellious when I started to date my boyfriend/now husband in high school. I have been married for seven years now and have a 4 and 2 year old (both boys).

How long have you been modest?

About four to five years only, sadly. I was modest as a child until I was about 16 out of obedience to my mother (who thought I was modest until I was 18, but I went behind her back in the clothes I wore in which she had no idea about). It took me until I was 23 after I had my first son to wake-up.

Why did you first decide to dress modestly?

A teacher had a student who loved my photography. This student attended a private school with a specific dress-code. One day after school she got changed into an outfit that was immodest. When she was noticed by a teacher on school grounds, she was sent into a meeting with the teacher and the principal. Her excuse for how she dressed was that she loved my photography and that I dressed in the way she was dressing at that time. She told them I was a Christian and that I loved God very much and that so did she, so she could wear it. The teacher told me this and I fought her on it a bit and was really upset and hurt. God revealed to me scriptures and convicted me greatly for the error of my way of dress. I realized that I couldn’t think about myself so much because I was a role model to others. At that time also there were men who commented often to me about how sexy I looked. I was a married woman, so this was equally convicting. I learned a lot from those people.

What motivates you to continue to dress modestly?

Many things motivate me. The number one thing would be Christ within me. How am I to set an example of Christ if I do not dress modestly? My husband motivates me. He is a recovering lust/porn addict and he is really blessed by how I view things and try to help other girls know what men really might be going through when they see immodest women. Also my children motivate me. How am I to set an example to them as they one day will choose a wife and woman with character if I am not one myself? Men who have lust addictions in general motivate me. Too many I have met over the past few years who long for women to not be distracting to them as they are trying to clean up their minds and lives. Lastly the youth in general motivate me because they are our future and need to know what is going on in their culture.

Do you believe that how you dress effects how you think of yourself? Why?

I do think that how I dress helps me have more confidence in Christ. I felt I needed to have sexual attention in the past to feel better about myself as a person and it made me feel a bit separated from Him, even though I believed in Him and read His word. Now that I dress modestly I feel at ease in life. It is a more simpler feeling. I think about how the Bible states how woman will want to try to please her husband and man in general. However, now I feel like I am pleasing to my husband and appreciated by other men because I am following Christ’s standards for modesty.

What would you say to encourage someone else to be modest?

I would tell them to not be a stumbling block to other men and to set an example to those who might admire and look up to them. How sad it is for us to go through life selfishly and thinking about what we want to do and how we want to dress without caring for the hearts of those around us who might be clenched in deep sin or dress in a way that can lead them into it. A good way to serve God is to help serve others, and through appearance could just be a first step.

In 2009, we asked the readers of this site why they have chosen modesty. In these posts we’ll share with you the reasons that they chose modesty as an encouragement to you in your decisions as well as a challenge to uphold each other.

Can you give us a brief biography?

I come from a family of 6 children (5 girls, one boy), and am the third in the line-up. I was raised in a Christian home starting from age 2 or so. I’m going to a junior college studying music and ASL. I’m constantly seeking to do what Christ would have me do. Despite failing miserably, God has been faithful and very merciful to me.

How long have you been modest?

Sort of all my life, but my standards of what is modest have changed drastically over the years. In the beginning modest meant simply no mid-riffs pretty much. Seriously though, for about the last 5-6 years.

Why did you first decide to dress modestly?

To honor God and to avoid being a lustful temptation for any guys. I want to save myself for my future husband…whoever he may be.

What motivates you to continue to dress modestly?

What I’ve seen and been told by some less than desirable guys concerning how they think about girls when they dress in a variety of different ways. I don’t want them to think such things about me. Also, I feel it honors my Lord when I dress modestly and I want to honor my husband (future).

Do you believe that how you dress effects how you think of yourself? Why?

Definitely. When wearing a skirt I tend to walk differently and carry myself in an entirely different way compared to when I’m wearing pants. Plus…different outfits make me feel awkward so I avoid them.

What would you say to encourage someone else to be modest?

To seek God and how HE would have you dress. Don’t ever do it simply because someone else said you better do it or else. If you feel a certain conviction about dressing modestly, stick to it and don’t go back as it’s a slippery slope leading to compromise after compromise…I speak from experience.

I’m looking for someone who likes to look through items that retailers have to offer, and can put together items of the same type across different sites.

Something like:

5 Modest Little Black Dresses

4 Long Length Camisoles

10 Dresses you’ll love to own.

With links, prices, and comments I think it’d be a fun way to comparison shop.

I’m looking for this to be a weekly feature, so it’s not too big of a time commitment.

It’s an easy thing to do. We look at others that differ from us and we make judgments about them—it happens in the blink of an eye.

And it happens within those that wish to be modest at an alarming rate.

Since this site started and I’ve been paying attention to the modesty movement, I’ve witnessed judgment up close and first hand. And I’m not talking about the question we all face—about whether a given item shows too much skin or whether it causes temptation.

I’m talking going beyond that and into the realm of the person and their character.

And it’s an easy thing to do, because what we show on the outside is a reflection on our inner person—regardless of whether we want it to be or not.

Judgment usually comes in one of two veins…

She’s Immodest, Which Means She’s Really Bad

The first is what the modest community imposes on the society in general. Many times we mix the person with what they wear. We say that a person who wears a short skirt, a low-cut top or bikini is necessarily someone of lesser character. It’s part because we wouldn’t do that or that we link that clothing to a certain “type of person.”

The problem with this is that it isn’t always the case. Sometimes it could be “what the person’s always known”. Sometimes it’s because of social conditioning.

We need to be careful that we don’t interpret motive. Yes, there are women that are wearing that low-cut top specifically to attract men, but that’s not always the case.

She’s Wearing Skirts, She Thinks She’s Better Than Us

The second happens the other way around. This happens when there’s a woman in your group that’s decided to always wear skirts or to wear hats in church. All of a sudden this woman is seen to fell that she’s better than everyone else, and therefore becomes someone that people no longer talk with, or that is singled out.

But this is part of the result of what we just discussed. There are women that look down on those that don’t dress to their standard—and people in both groups paint everyone in the other group as just like the worst that they’ve experienced.

But Why?

We can’t change other people, but we can change what we do. We can stop the judging. We can choose to not look down on someone else because they don’t dress how we think is right. We can choose not to look down on someone who dresses up—to not infer that they somehow think that they are better than us.

Instead, we should have open, honest dialog, and we should also look to build strength between us. It’s important to listen to one another, and not to rush to judgment.

Jeans. They’re everywhere. Most people own three or four (or more) pairs and they come in a variety in styles, sizes, colors, and ripped and non-ripped.

If anyone wants theirs ripped, you don’t have to pay the high price tag, my jean ripping service is both modest and reasonably inexpensive!

The problem with jeans on women is two-fold.

First: Mario

Yes, that feature that many attribute with plumbers is a main problem with most jeans. In fact, a whole underwear line has become prominent based on what will show in these low cut jeans, and songs have been made about tattoos that become visible when backsides become visible.

Now, jeans that would cover correctly probably wouldn’t appeal to most women—as they would tend to look old fashioned and less modern. The other problem is that the garment that would help with this situation—some kind of <strike>adult onesie</strike> I mean body suit might not be an attractive solution either.

Yet the problem still remains.

Second: In Front

Girls and boys have different physical anatomies, and jeans that are tight definitely bring this out, and the male mind notices. That’s as far as I’m going there.

What’s the Solution?

If you’re going to get jeans, make sure they are loose fitting and that they cover. Katt Anderson in her article on From the Waist Down puts it this way:

If your Jeans are so low cut that when you bend over, or sit down, your underwear shows, it is not modest. Any clothing that is so tight that every curve in your body shows, or you can’t walk comfortably in it, is not modest.

The lack of clothing is very enticing to men. In 2 Samuel 11:2-5, we read about David viewing Bathsheba as she bathed. David shouldn’t have looked, you might say. However, Bathsheba should not have been exposing herself. The less clothes you wear, the more you make men look at you.

So take care ladies—like the maintenance issues, check to see in those store mirrors how the jeans fit. Pay attention to what happens when you bend over, and make sure that you don’t have to pour yourself into them. The men around you will be thankful.

I think this is one of the prettiest dresses that we’ve reviewed from Jen Clothing.

I like the color, the style, and the under-layer is very feminine sporting a dot and flower print.

The neckline and shoulders are fine, and the length isn’t so that you’d walk on it.

I think pink and blue are great colors for women, and this dress looks great on the model.

The only thing to watch out for is the shiny satin material. If it’s too tight or gathers too much, you could have a minor problem.

Other than that, this is a great option!

I’m not sure how formal it looks, perhaps semi-formal?

So says an 11 year old on the topic of Modesty:

A girl should not look like a boy. A girl should look like a girl. A modest girl should not get a boy to look at her. Don’t wear stuff that shows off your body. Modesty at it’s core is dressing to honor God rather than dressing to draw attention to yourself.

Boiled down, that’s what modesty on the outside is all about. And modesty on the inside is what drove this young lady to write this!
