So, while we’re discussing layering, take a look at some of our recent Quick Reviews.  What you will find is a list of layering items, and some of the comments that we make go something like:

“This would make a good layering piece.  It’s long, and the top is high enough, but it’s tight…”

In fact, in some we suggest that what could be used it public as a under-layer could be used in private as an outer layer.  If you follow me…

Check out this quirky bit of information from the modesty survey:

Seeing a girl take off a pullover (i.e. a shirt that must be pulled over the head) is a stumbling block, even if she is wearing a modest shirt underneath.

Age 21 -  If it’s just pulled straight up and over, yeah it gets the blood pumping. Especially if the shirt underneath is pulled up slightly. However, using the method where you wedge your elbow into the shirt to take it off severely reduces the amount of clothes coming up and is less sexy. It looks functional and isn’t really stumbling block at all.

Age 16 – It can give the illusion of undressing, even if she really isn’t.

Age 16 – The movements, for some unknown reason, stimulate a guys mind to think lustful thoughts. Also the "modest shirts" often go up a few inches with the pullover before the girl notices.

If these guys are saying that it’s something that attracts them, then that’s what we’re looking for when it comes to your husband!

Why is this so powerful?  I think that the guys in the survey have the right idea.  Since men are visual and attraction is in the mind, seeing a girl take a layer of clothing of in front of them causes their brain to go further—especially if done in a provocative manner.

So, ladies, make sure that you dress in layers, and try this out!

justagirl4god: I think this is a great example of using layers to make a shirt modest. It’s not too tight, but she won’t have problems bending over, and the necklace doesn’t draw attention to her chest. The only issue I have is with the big letters on the front of the shirt. This sort of thing can draw unwanted attention. Overall, mostly modest.

MInTheGap: Definitely a good use of layers. Without the white layer, this shirt would be way too short. The fact that it’s white and there are white letters helps. Since there’s a distribution of the letters across the shirt, I’m not drawn to any particular place. Nice work.

MInTheGap: There are three sets of straps here and a lot going on. I think that the color scheme accentuates the bust and draws attention to it. The pose and facial expression are saying volumes as well. Don’t really have a problem with the jeans.

Foy: The layering in the top is very bad – the buttons on the undershirt attract a lot of attention, as do the contrasting colors in that region. Both layers are a bit tight as well.

I do have a bit of a problem with the pants – the zipper is not flush; it sticks out. It’s subtle, but it does draw attention.

MInTheGap: This is an interesting outfit. I would guess that it’s one piece on top rather than multiple layers, but it gives the same effect. I think that the neck line is a little low, but the pants seem fine.

justagirl4god: I would say that this picture is a great example of the fact that one can dress modestly and still look ‘cool’. I love how her hair and necklace draw your eyes up towards her beautiful smile. Her skirt is nice and long, covering everything even when sitting down. The pink shirt would be immodest if worn without something underneath, but the tank shirt means that all that should be covered is. The only ‘negative’ I would have about this outfit is that the shirt seems to be pulling a little tight across her bust, but that is just personal opinion… All up – one modest outfit!

MInTheGap: This is a pretty good outfit for a senior pic.  My only question is whether the under layer on her top is too low.  She would have problems with bending over to pick something up—it’s on the border for me.  However, the fact that the layer is darker doesn’t draw my attention as much as some of the other sets of layering that we’ve seen.

Foy: Her hair is a tricky item. If you keep it in the front, it provides a natural travel line for the eye to go from the face to the chest, which can be difficult for some guys. However, if you put it back, more skin would be exposed. Either way, it could be difficult for some people. Please understand: I’m not saying that long hair is immodest; I’m just saying that sometimes this can be an occasion problem for some guys.

MInTheGap: I never quite understood why people would wear a shirt with that many buttons– and then not button them. In this case, the layering helps the outfit and makes it so too much chest doesn’t show, but your eyes are definitely drawn to that area because of the bright white layer.

Foy: I’ve got to agree with MInTheGap on this one – the eyes are drawn strait to the chest. It doesn’t matter that it’s all covered; it’s where the eyes are.

MInTheGap: The skirt is a good length, and there’s little exposed skin because of the boots. The layers on top provide a good deal of covering. However, the skirt– like most pencil skirts– is tight around the midsection (you can see where it’s being pulled by her pose– so it’s not as modest as it could be.

Foy: I don’t care for this type of shirt: even though everything is covered, the fact that it is a V- neck can create some troubles for guys. I also notice that there might be a slit on the left side – I’m not sure if that’s her leg or the background. If it is her leg, I might be saying slightly immodest.

MInTheGap: I have no problem with the length of her under layer. It offers good coverage, and the shirt seems fine as well. Her shorts, however, are a different story. They could stand to be quite a bit longer. I know that, to some degree they are bunched up because of the way that she’s sitting, but not that much. Longer shorts would definitely make this modest.

Foy: Shorts are funny things; their true length is hard to determine while sitting. The material on the top cover more skin while sitting down, but once you stand up, they appear to shrink. If they show that much skin while sitting, they’ll show more while standing.

I’d also like to see the front of the shirt before making a real opinion.

MInTheGap: The under layer makes this much more modest than it would have been with just the tank top. The shirt is not too tight, and it looks comfortable.

Foy: I think this is great. This style of tank top usually excentuates the bust – this one doesn’t. The pattern also helps this shirt maintain modesty.

MInTheGap: In reality, a lot more of her skin is covered than some of the formals we looked at; however, there’s a lot that’s immodest here. White is a very tricky color to wear because it is translucent unless thick– you can see that her under layer is showing her underthings. The shirt is also too tight and not long enough to cover where her pants meet. This look, though covered, is immodest. Buttoning up the jacket would help.

Foy: ”MinTheGap: Psychic” is back at it, saying everything that I would have said. As I’m sure regular readers know, I don’t care for white, and this shirt is a perfect example.

MInTheGap: Part of the problem with lying down is that “things” don’t stay put. Body parts want to escape, and what may have been modest standing up no longer is. That makes this outfit barely modest in this position .

Foy: The photograph?  No. Definitely  immodest. The outfit itself? Ehhh….I’d have to see her standing up. I’d need to see if a similar effect was had in a vertical position.

Erin: I think the neckline is too low. Other than that, it is modest. (Now personally though, I don’t especially like those colors on her…but that’s not a modesty issue…)

MInTheGap: Here’s one of my pet peeves– dressing in a color that matches skin tone.  I mean, that in and of itself I consider immodest.  So, I’m having a hard time picking out where her chest ends and where her shirt begins.  If I’m seeing it in the right spot, I don’t consider it that bad, and it’s plenty long and has layers.  I’m going mostly modest.

The items were packaged beautifully, all tied up in a pink ribbon and wrapped in polka-dotted tissue paper. I appreciated this little extra touch of “specialness”. Very classy!

I tried the Mini Camisole first and was really impressed! Unlike a lot of camisoles from even “modest” companies, this actually came up high enough in the front that I would be comfortable wearing it. It was trimmed at the bottom with pretty, soft lace and elastic that keeps it from “riding up”. The fabric is a non-fading, very stretchy lycra. It may not breath especially well in hot weather, but that is off-set by the fact that it’s only a “half-cami” so it might actually be cooler than a full-length cotton one! The fabric is also a little bit heavy, but that seems like a good thing to me. It would be hard to accidentally poke a hole in it or have it wear out fast since it seems to be a nice quality fabric.

The Mini Midriff was also very nice! Again, the fabric is very good quality, with an elastic waistband. I think this would work especially well for people who are long-waisted and need a little extra to “lengthen” their shirts. Since I am really short-waisted most of my shirts are long enough to begin with, so this wouldn’t help me as much as other ladies.

The prices on these two items might be a little higher than I would normally buy, having never seen the clothing and not knowing the quality. However, since I have seen how nice these pieces are, I would definitely consider buying some of the “Mini” line especially, since they are so versatile and practical.

Molly’s Clothing carries a great selection of layering pieces classic t-shirts and camisoles, some cute dresses, and a few feminine accessories. I would highly recommend you check them out!

Layer it.

Layering can make an immodest shirt modest.  It can extend or make the shirt longer so that it helps coverage even when bending, and can help when reaching overhead for things.

However, there is some layering that is more distracting and should be avoided.  And that’s what I think of when considering today’s question.

What do guys think when things are layered, (are they noticing the layers or only the “immodest” piece)?

Any change in color is going to draw attention—that much is certain.  Contrast does that—whether it’s modest or immodest.  The thing that I personally find distracting, however, is when a layer is worn underneath something that would be immodest because of it’s depth—or V-necks.

When a layer is worn under a V-Neck, not only is my attention drawn to that area, but I find myself wondering why in the world a lady has purchased a shirt that low in the first place.  Her husband may have led her to believe it’d be fine in public with a layer, but I find it distracting.

Not necessarily immodest, but definitely not drawing my eyes where they should be going.

MInTheGap – It’s fairly tight on her top, though the jeans are ok.  My jury’s out as far as the undershirt that shows through look, but it can be done well.  I’m going for mostly modest here.

Erin – The jeans could be a little looser in the thigh, but I think bootcut pants tend to have that problem. Nice job with the layering!
