This is a cute casual outfit, great for every day, but the heels help dress it up a little and keep it from looking too casual.

The purple top is high cut and not too tight, which is a good thing.  It might be better if she didn’t tuck the it in the front only, as it draws attention to the legs more.

Her jeans look pretty tight, and since they are skinny jeans, they are form fitting. These types of jeans aren’t always modest on all body types, so be aware of that. If she wore a longer top, this outfit would be more modest, but it would still be stylish and comfortable.

Tennis shoes:
I cannot think of anything immodest about tennis shoes.

Flip Flops/Sandals:
In some cultures feet were considered an intimate part of the body and should be covered up. Some colleges and professional companies still require a dress code that doesn’t allow flip flops, sandals, or opened toed shoes. Flip flops and sandals are cute, but not always appropriate.

They are cute to wear, but don’t wear them just to attract attention!

High Heels:
Rebekah, one of our readers suggested this topic, concerning high heels she said, “Wearing heels (not all, but lots) does make your chest stick out and your backside stick out. Also, to walk in them properly you must swing, and this men notice whether they are wanting to or not. These things do not help a girl exhibit an attitude of modesty.” She is right!  Heels aren’t wrong to wear, some just send the wrong signal.

Rebekah gave me permission to use some thoughts she shared in an  email:

“Modesty encompasses clothing issues, but is basically an attitude of life that shines through in what we wear. This attitude is one of humility, yet realization also that God made me special for His glory.  I don’t have to flaunt what I have to gain importance in the eyes of others, but rather I should treat my body with respect and dignity. I am a special and unique creation of God, put together in every part to specific dimensions and particular qualities predetermined by a loving God. He sees my body as perfectly what He designed it to be, and views me as a member of His royal family.  As royalty, I should dress as a daughter of the king…I should seek to flatter, not accentuate, to cover, not shrink wrap, make good statements, not offer sinful suggestions to the mind of a man, to adorn, not slop together, to dress as if I am always on call to approach the King of kings, or act as His ambassador. It is true that God seems my heart, but it is also just as true that man cannot see my heart, he judges by the outward appearance, and that is in about 3 seconds of time.  If this is how we approach fashion, we can weed through many of the trashy themes out there which lower our thoughts to ideas of trying to ‘fix’ what is wrong with me, cover up my imperfections, or using my body to advertise in order to attract what we think we need in relationships.”

I look at shoes the way I look at clothing, if it draws to much attention, or  I am wearing it to show off, it’s best to leave it in my closet!
Deciding what to wear doesn’t have to be difficult, seek God’s advice!

MInTheGap: The skirt length is a bit too short, but the jacket is fine, and the layering seems to be okay from what I can see of it. The heels look ridiculously high!

Foy: Looks good to me. I’d like to see the books moved though, to get a better idea of the entire outfit. But that’s just me.

Is This Modest?

MInTheGap: This is one of those cases where it’s more in the pose and the fabric than what is covered. The heels that she’s wearing show off leg tone, which isn’t necessarily bad, but it goes to the posture. The felt type material of the dress is causing shadows to be made to show the outline of the leg, though the length is acceptable. The top is high enough and has coverage, but the pose is a little strange to me.

Foy: I’m going marginal on this one. Shimmery clothes draw attention to the wearer – the opposite of what modesty is trying to do. The skirt is also just a smudge too short.

Is This Modest?

MInTheGap: Though this is one of those cases where the dress is not to the floor, it is a decent length and I can’t see the knee.  That means, to me, that it’s not going to be as high maintenance.  The front is a square cut—though not my favorite, it is high and covers. 

Great dress.

Foy: This is being really picky, I know, but I’d like to see the shoulders just a half inch higher. I also don’t care for the “waist band” effect, as it accentuates her curves. Overall – a 4/5 on the modest scale.

Erin:  I really like the feminine details of this outfit, but the skirt is so short I’m going “immodest”.

MInTheGap: The dress has good coverage up top, but it is a good couple inches above the knee.  I think that she’d find this dress to be high maintenance.   I’m not going all the way immodest, but she should look for something a little longer.

Erin: Side views are so deceiving sometimes. I think I’m getting a glimpse of too much chest, and the skirt is too short (in my opinion). So assuming I’m getting the right vibe about the depth of the neckline, I’m going to go immodest.

MInTheGap: See, to me, the dress length is fine (it covers the knee), the heels tend to make it look like she’s showing more leg, but she’s showing her feet.  I can’t tell about the top– it may be low, and for that I’m going borderline.  Put that jacket back on and it may be modest.

Erin: This is…wild. The tightness is what bothers me the most, especially in the top. I’m undecided on all the animal print…

MInTheGap: The dress length is acceptable, and though that’s a high heel, I’m not too picky.  She must have extraordinary balance to be able to do that pose!  However, the cut of the top of the dress may be revealing in some motions.  I’m going mostly modest.

Erin: I think both the t-shirt and jeans are a little bit too tight.

MInTheGap: The jeans are too tight at the waist and the fact that the outer shirt is loose makes it appear that the t-shirt is too tight, even if it’s fine.  The backpack may also be making the shirt appear tighter.  I’m going borderline.

Erin: The shirt I think is a halter-top, which I don’t consider modest. And what’s up with the shoes…no wonder she’s sitting down. I’d fall over or loose feeling in my toes!

MInTheGap: Lots of shoulders, really high heels, but the V is rather high.  A jacket would go a long way here.  I’m going slightly immodest.  ‘Course if this photo was taken after labor day, the white pants would sink it!

MInTheGap: Though I will admit that shoulders are attractive in a mysterious sort of way, I would not say they cause me to stumble.  However, the skirt is too short, and the shoes look painful!  I’m going mostly immodest here.

Erin: The shirt seems to accentuate her upper half too much.

MInTheGap: I always find pants that don’t make it to the ankles to be strange, and they draw attraction, but immodest, per se.  The pants are tight, and there is attention drawn to her top because she chose to wear a bed-sheet with arm holes, but Annie said that you’re never fully dressed without a smile.  I’m going for borderline.

MInTheGap – Borderline.  The pants are long enough, but the V looks deep and the shoulders are bared.  She’s also in heels, hope she doesn’t fall over.

Rachel – The pants are adorable but the shoulders are a little bare, even for a "cocktail" attire.  A cardigan or 3/4 sleeve cropped jacket would make this modest.
