So says an 11 year old on the topic of Modesty:

A girl should not look like a boy. A girl should look like a girl. A modest girl should not get a boy to look at her. Don’t wear stuff that shows off your body. Modesty at it’s core is dressing to honor God rather than dressing to draw attention to yourself.

Boiled down, that’s what modesty on the outside is all about.  And modesty on the inside is what drove this young lady to write this!

There’s been some discussion as to whether photos of ladies laying down are appropriate– so I figured that we should probably feature a few to take a look, and see if we can figure out why some people believe they are not– and what better avenue than Quick Reviews!

Oh, and this is my first attempt to use our Flickr Group and to blog from there, so bear with me…

MInTheGap: What you need to notice about this photo is what happens when the girl lifts up her head and what’s shown. Though I don’t think this is immodest, it can all hinge on how high the top goes.

Foy: I agree with you. Her hair is in a somewhat strategic place, so its a bit hard to determine how much you could see. But if I were standing directly in front of her, I would consider it immodest – due more to what you *might* see, than what is seen. Does that make any sense?

When you see someone dressed immodestly, what do you do?

Three weeks ago my kids started their homeschool co-op soccer.  I was surprised by the different looks that people had.  Most were fine, but a few stood out.

One guy had a full beard going as a highschooler.  A few had high priced soccer equipment.

And then there was the one girl.  You can imagine her.  All the boys were in her orbit, and she knew it.  She was in a modest top, but her shorts could not get any shorter.

And three weeks later it’s still the same.  Though her socks may be long, her shorts are very immodest.  So immodest that my wife noticed it too.

What would you do?  It’s not like we’re leaders—we’re parents with Kindergartners.  They certainly aren’t going to stumble over this girl’s showing of skin.

Should you ignore it?  Tell the coach?  Find the young lady’s mother/father?

It doesn’t take long for parents to want to make their children look cute or handsome.  Whole industries have revolved around princess themes for girls, and beauty pageants now extend all the way down to the youngest of girls.

It’s definitely more of an obsession for the parents than the kids—usually meaning that the kids have more stress.

Everyone wants to show off how beautiful their son or daughter is.  In your parents eyes, you were the cutest thing.

The problem is that, for the most part, cute becomes making them look grown  up—or sexy.

They put them in dresses that expose the skin, they put them in makeup, and they teach them at a young age that they have to fit a certain standard of beauty.  We all know of the extremes, but there are many that are not extreme that are teaching their young boys and girls the same message.

Little girls are cute when they look like this, they instruct their boys and girls.

And I’m not saying that it’s wrong to dress up, to imagine yourself as a princess, or any of that.  What I’m saying is that we need to make sure that reinforce modesty as something that’s key even when we’re playing.  That the inner person is the one that we deem important, not the outer.
