Here’s another outfit that looks comfortable, and is fine as far as modesty is concerned in most situations. 

The top is nice and feminine with a translucent look of lace on the arms, plenty of fabric and it has good coverage.  The necklace is pretty, and I assume that it goes well with her eyes.

The belt and the boots match—something I didn’t know I was supposed to do and the jeans tucked in works for this look.

The jeans are not too tight (you can see some of the material has room to move) and there’s no fading or holes in it.

I have no problems with this look, and think that it’s comfortable and appropriate.  Though I know that some believe you must always wear a skirt if you’re a woman, I have no problem identifying this person as a member of the fairer sex and I don’t have a problem with modesty here.

Is This Modest?

Hannah: I really have a problem with the way the belt draws the gaze to the bust. I think the way the shirt is fairly tight across the chest and then is pulled in by the brightly colored belt is not an appropriate style.

MInTheGap: As a whole, this outfit is interesting.  I’m not sure what I think about a tunic in the first place—it looks a bit like a dress over pants.  The jeans seem fine with plenty of room.  The tunic itself is a bit odd with the belt—though also a bit patriotic.  The other views look fine, it’s the way that the belt sits so high on the front view (or is it the way she’s standing with her hips?) that makes this look questionable.

Foy: I agree with both of you. The belt/band sits way too high, and does seem to outline the bust.

Is This Modest?

Erin: Wow, the dress (is this really a dress??) is too short, so much so that I wonder if she was shopping in the “shirts” section by accident.

MInTheGap: Well, I think it is a dress, because there is a belt camouflaged in there.  Of course she’s going to have to be careful anywhere she goes, but the angle does play some tricks on  you.  It’s a good couple inches above the knee, so it’s not very good as far as “low maintenance.”  The top of it, however, is one of the most modest ones I’ve seen.  I’m going slightly immodest here because of the top.  There’s too much leg surface area to go borderline, unfortunately.

Ok. So maybe I’m old fashioned. But I always believed that belts were used to hold up your pants. Right?

No one wants their pants falling down. 

Well, most people don’t want that to happen. Our world has changed – so much so that style is sought after more than functionality. People became more concerned with looking good than actually having quality clothes. This even affected the humble belt. Guy belts soon had big belt buckles; girl belts became “bedazzled”, first with sparkles, and now with shiny studs. And know what? Belts  aren’t even being used on pants anymore. Instead, they’re being placed on shirts and dresses. They become, in effect, useless. But they’re SHINY! And bright. And full of Bling. So they are used. A lot. Even when they are actually used on pants, the pants themselves are quite low, making one wonder: “If you have a belt, why not use it properly, eh?” 

As I look at these belts, and think “Is this Modest?”, I have to say no. The entire concept of modesty revolves around wearing clothes that do not attract attention to one’s “assets” – both north and south. All a shiny belt does is scream: “Look at my waist!” Once an eye goes there, lets just say that things, including the eye, go downhill. By wearing a dull colored belt, one can have functionality and yet keep themselves modest.

Erin: The dress is way too short. Not sure what I think about the (lack of) sleeves…

MInTheGap: Though I will admit that shoulders are attractive in a mysterious sort of way, I would not say they cause me to stumble.  However, the skirt is too short, and the shoes look painful!  I’m going mostly immodest here.

MInTheGap – What is up with the half sweatshirts?  They look strange to me.  The undershirt shows some midriff (probably have to keep pulling it down) and it goes too low.  Is that a hole in the jeans on her upper thigh?  Jeans are tight.  Sorry—immodest.

MInTheGap – The heels seem to be forcing her forward.  Her shirt is a little low in the front, and the length is borderline.  I’d say borderline.

Erin – I think this borders on being too fitted in the top, but the neckline needs something to fill it in. It’s also too short.

According to Men’s Health, a belted dress or skirt says that the woman that chooses to wear it thinks:

“I feel pretty, classically feminine, and flirty”.

Why do they believe this? Because small waists appeals to men.

This is nothing new. Just look at a lot of the wedding gowns of today that have to be tied up with all kinds of strings, or the corsets of a while back.

Which is why a woman’s Waist-to-Hip Ratio is important.

Men tend to enjoy looking at women that have a small WHR (0.7 was the WHR for Marilyn Monroe or Scarlett Johansson).

Anything that draws attention to a girl’s curves or tummy is showing off this aspect of a woman’s body.

Is this Modest?

Good question! The dress on the left certainly doesn’t look immodest to me. The neckline is not too low, the dress falls below the knee and though the dress shimmers, it isn’t necessarily immodest.
