Why is it that in the early 1900s all women wore hats to church, and now those same churches don't have the same opinion… did we get smarter or do we just not like sticking out?

I have a lot to say about headcoverings… We wore little lace pieces on top of our heads for about 5 years. I think the bible talks of our hair as a covering, not a little doily. I don't want to offend anyone… I just think that 1 Corinthians 11:15 sums it up for us.

I believe that my hair is my covering and so wearing a hat is not necessary.

Wasn't there a time when a woman wouldn't be seen in in "town" without a hat, because it would have been considered improper?  Maybe it was more of a social norm than anything.  Just a thought.  I guess I need to go do some research on that!

I study laws of modesty for Jewish women and I'd like to share what I know with your audience.

The Hebrew Bible (5 Books of Moses) that the Jews call the Written Torah, writes about a married woman's headcovering in the Book of Numbers 5:18, "the Kohen (High Priest) shall uncover the hair of the wayward woman". The wayward woman is one who was suspected of extra-marital affairs. From here we learn that married Jewish women are required to cover their hair in public, a law passed down through Moses from G-d Himself.  Jewish laws of modesty are based on this verse for married woman's hair covering.  This law applies to all Jewish married women.

However, the Gemara (Talmud, the Oral Torah), also records gentile married women covering their hair as well in the times of our Holy Jewish Sages (Sanhedrin 58b).  Many religions that spin off from the Hebrew Bible require their female adherents to also observe laws of modesty, although the practice today varies.
