The Bible is clear that a certain sex should wear skirts– and it's men!  No, seriously, read through Leviticus and there is a lot there about lifting the father's skirt.

So, is there a Biblical basis for desiring women to wear skirts, or not?

The only thing I can say is the verses Paul (I think) writes which are essentially "Women should dress like women and men should dress like men." Society seems to determine what clothing is feminine and what clothing is masculine.

Well, there are passages in the Old Testament that talk about dressing like man and woman, but a lot of the time we talk in "absolutes"– like "women should wear skirts."

So, what I'm getting at is is this an absolute, or something that– like you suggest– can be defined by culture?  What if your culture decides to make the two sexes look pretty much the same?

I think that the most important thing is to appear feminine, while being covered up.

But what is feminine?  I mean, compared to the middle eastern culture, they would say that our females are not covered up.  They have trouble with ankles!

Compared to African culture, we're too covered up.  Even some Asian women work topless.

So, is there an objective standard of what is feminine and covered up, or is it something that's completely cultural?

Why do I feel like I am suddenly in a college sociology class? :P

I'm going to answer your question by saying that everything is subjective.

Now, there's something that I can prove is false.  Everything can't be subjective, because that very statement is objective, isn't it?

But is modesty purely cultural or not?

Yes and no, like in esatern culture, amish,… go to far with modesty. I think god planteed something in us after the fall of man, that we need and want to cover up as a protection. But know we live in extremes. Beauty is distorted. I think we must be culture wise, like paul but we also need to free peolpe if they are in bondage of modesty or in our culture with too much "freedom". We need havens, so that people can find rest and true love.

Is God cultural or not? So maybe real/unbounded modesty isn't either?

Sorry, I'm not english, so please excuse my grammatic & and any mistakes. Thanks. If something is totally out of sense or wrong I would appreciate any "correction":-)

Well, I'm pretty sure that we were given a sense of shame because of sin– that's why we wanted to cover, and yes, people are driven to extremes.

I don't think God is cultural, so I believe there is an objective standard, but a subjective component– because we can be convicted by our heart.

Oh, wow–this is a really good question!

I think that there are parts of modesty that are subjective and purely cultural, and some that are not. For example, in one chapter of Isaiah (I'd have to look it up) God is saying that He will curse a certain nation, and one of the things he says he will do, is, "bare their thighs," and shame them. From that I get my guideline of nothing above the knee. I think that that one isn't subjective, because God said that it was making them naked.

But I'm just figuring it out too, like the rest of y'all.

Also, I've read that the pants/dresses came from the fact that in the Bible, men actually wore a pant-like thing under their robes so they could work, while the women did not.

This is a tricky subject… because of those Biblical passages, we could say that all men should wear skirts adn that women shouldn't (becuase it would be dressing as men).

However, I would say that (as mentioned) this has to do with culture.

In the Biblical times, that was the thing they did! Their culture was that men wore skirts. There are still many cultures that, in traditional settings, belive and live the same way. I have no problems with this and think that that is fine – because it is what their culture is…

(argh! I'm confusing myself…)

Okay, so most of the time, what we wear is to do with the culture we live in. We all get that. BUT! I would say that modesty has nothing to do with that! (go ahead, give me strange looks – I'll explain)

When Paul says that women should dress with 'propirety', he means (but the dictionary) to dress 'Appropriate, customary, or proper mode of behavior in a particular situation'.

So really, as long as we are dressing appropirately for the culture and situation we are in, we are being modest, right?

Sort of! I would say that as Christians, aiming to create a Christian culture around us, we should live and dress as if we are always directly in that culture, ie, direclty with other Chritsians, with Christ, and so living in a manner which glorifies Him.

(I'm hoping that all makes sense… I'm going to stop for now before I get to confused…) :) :p

'And if He chose them by grace, it was not because of the things they have done. For if they could be made God's people by the things they did, God's gift of grace would not be a gift.' Romans 11:6

Intersesting– you see, I believe that to many that read this that are of the more conservative bent, dressing "appropriately for the activity as pertaining to the culture" would not be good enough.  Because you could then justify one piece bathing suits, or bikinis in certain circumstances.

However, there is a heart attitude component– what you are trying to do with what you are wearing– that I think directly applies.

I guess what I was trying to say is that, as Christians, we have a culture which is Christ like. And so, we should dress according to what we feel that culture is. We don't want to live by the culture of this world, and so we would aim not to dress by the standards of that culture – instead we dress by standards set by our revelation of Christ.

(Am I making any more sense?!? lol)

Yes you are, lol. I think you're right- it's all about how we believe God wants us to dress, not about how the world wants us to dress.

Yay! I made sense! (finally)

To me, modesty is going to mean something different to every single person, but if we are aiming to glorify Him with every single part of our lives (incuding what we wear) we are going to end up wearing something which is modest…
