With the attachment to losing one's purity, the loud music, and the immodest attire, does that make it so that the prom is something a Christian should avoid?

I would have to say yes. The only way I think it would be okay possibly is if it was hosted by a Christian church school or something similar and was closely looked after by adults. That is still a huge maybe though. In most cases, the prom is something I would try to avoid. It doesn't seem  like the proper place or atmosphere for a Christian to be in.

I went to the prom, and I'm planning on going again. I think of it this way: I can set a good example, have a good time, and make a lasting, positive memory of high school. My dress will be modest, I am certainly not going to do suggestive dance moves, and my boyfriend isn't going (because of the others' clothing), so I know I will not be losing my purity. Besides, my school does a good job of having chaperones, hiring a DJ who plays appropriate music only, and guarding the refreshments for student safety.

However, it is likely I will not hang around for After-Prom, because last year they had a gambling theme and that made me uncomfortable. Besides, I was so tired by then it wasn't any fun anymore.

I think if you go to prom with the right heart, just to enjoy it and be a good example, that it is not a problem. I mean, Jesus ate with tax collectors and that was probably an environment he was supposed to avoid. *shrug* That's just my thoughts.

Throughout most of the Old Testament, those groups commonly referred to as Gentiles were thought of as lower.  Even in the Gospels, the Savior didn't associate with many who weren't of the House of Israel, but, when the time was right, He sent His Apostles into the Gentile world, causing a great upswing in believers.

In the same vein, because we try to follow His example, does that make it wrong for us to associate with those who might not want to do so?

As I understand the question asked in this thread, it's a question of whether or not it's okay to mingle with others in a place where it's well publicized if bad things happen:  Drunkeness; loss of virtue; gyrating dance moves; even some that result in the death of innocent babies.

However, these, and I make this statement full well knowing that I do, are the rarities.  With the hundreds of bad stories coming from Prom, there are thousands, if not millions, of stories of kids who go and have a fantastic time.

This would be a case for straining at gnats, where the vast majority remain unsullied by the bad although a few, here and there, slip up.

So, in answer to the question…no, it's not unBiblical, not at all.

While it may be true that such things are a rarity, my question was intended to go a little deeper.  The New Testament tells us that we should avoid all appearances of evil, and though the events you mentioned may be rare, it is becoming more linked with the event.

Popular movies glamorize and highlight the idea that a teen's "first time" might be linked to the prom.  Different schools have instituted breathalizer tests and after-prom programs in order to make sure that the people in attendance are sober.

To me, a test could be "Would I be asked if I had sex or drank if I went?"  If so, then I think there's an association problem.
