We all know that a majority of cheerleading outfits are immodest– and they made that worse when they went to the dance outfits.  But what about other uniforms– like volleyball?  Is it the intent to generate interest in the sports by wearing uniforms that expose body parts, or are some of these things necessary to compete well in the sport?

Depends on the sport I guess. To my knowledge, you can play volleyball just as well in a t-shirt and pants or long shorts as you could in a bikini or short shorts. (Unless someone knows something I don't?)  Although I do think that some sports could be different and they might actually have valid/scientific reasons for the way they dress….In competitive swimming and maybe figure skating, they need everything to be aerodynamic and their clothing has to be pretty close the body to perfect the sport, therefore making it rather difficult to remain modest.

I have a comment about track, but I have to go, so I'll edit this post later.

It seems that in professional swimming, women are usually dressed more modestly than the men. Or maybe this is in diving only.

I think when it comes to beach volleyball, the clothes are there more for the sex appeal than for comfort. I've never seen an indoor volleyball game with shirtless guys and bikini clad women. So in order to make people watch it, they marketed to the "beach" in beach volleyball.

So say we all.

Ack, I can't edit my earlier post- sorry for wasting your time with that!

Anyway, with track, I think it is easier to run when you're wearing shorter shorts, simply because there's less fabric there to cause friction and twist around your knees. I'm not saying I approve, because I don't, but I understand the logic. I run faster in track shorts than in my workout shorts, which come to my knees. Do I think it's necessary to wear a top that looks like a bra and shows the stomach? Of course not. At least wear a full length top, people. Nobody really wants to see your stomach rippling as you run! Ew.

In professional swimming, it's all about the streamlining. It just happens that more of the super-smooth fabric makes for better streamlining. Witness the LAZR suit that Michael Phelps wore during the Olympics.

Beach volleyball- yes, it is all about the sex appeal, I agree. I'd say that indoor volleyball isn't much more modest, especially the shorts. The tops aren't AS bad.

The irony is that even academic pursuits are full of immodesty. I was at speech contest today, and I saw several girls dressed immodestly, and one especially sticks out because I thought she was going to have a wardrobe malfunction when she bowed at the end of her speech! eek! It's frustrating to see this fashion of a shirt and leggings- for one thing, it is NOT attractive, because it looks incomplete, and for another, it's just not modest. And last night at the scholar awards night, there were several girls wearing immodest clothes, especially their tops. I don't understand why people think that showing more skin is "dressy". It's distracting, really. (a side note- Modesty IS noticed! A lady came up to me last night after the ceremony and asked if I went to church and if so, where, and I told her. She commented that it was refreshing to see someone who seemed to care more about her appearance and that dressed 'differently'. That made me smile :) and it really was helpful to have a stranger encourage my modesty. Here's what I was wearing: http://i74.photobucket.com/alb…..8594-1.jpg)

I have brothers that did cycling, races and such, and they always would have to wear really tight fitting clothes too. Streamlining is big part of that I'm sure. Thats why I never got into it myself even though I would have liked too, I just can't condone dressing myself like that for just a sport. Confused

As a rower on a crew team, i wear unisuits during competitions.

I just googled the word "unisuit" and found this picture of one that looks similar in style to the ones we wear: VRC Unisuit - front view

With crew, its very neccesary to wear tight fitting clothing to row, or else the fabric of longer shorts can get caught in the track, and sleaves can be befuddled in the oar handles. Its happened all too much to me at practice.

For Vollyball, i know the tight fitting clothing originated from large t-shirts getting in the way when people fell down, but i do think they took it to an extreme with the short shorts.

Hi Quidproquo91, I have a question. Do those come with wider straps? I would think that it would be okay to have wider straps and a higher front- it doesn't seem like that would cause an issue with the oars and sleeves and whatnot. Am I wrong?
