Are all skirts modest?  If not, why do many women believe that skirts are the only modest option?

Are all skirts modest? that's like asking if all shirts are modest, and we know that some are and some aren't.

I am not one of those people who believes that skirts are THE modest option, only a part of the "modesty arsenal" so to speak. However, the reasoning is that Bible verse about women should dress like women and men should dress like men. Men don't wear skirts (kilts excluded).

Restroom signs show girls in skirts– but the pantsuit is being used a lot more.  Are we seeing a cultural change that could see both sexes in pants?  Is that wrong?

We have already had that cultural change. Witness how many schools no longer require girls to wear skirts. I have older adult friends who had to wear skirts to school and were not allowed to wear pants unless it was very cold, and even then they had to wear the pants underneath their skirts.

Is it wrong to wear pants? No, I don't think it is. Women can wear more "feminine" pants than men. Also, there are practical things about wearing pants. The fabric of a skirt gets in the way of certain activities. (For example, when I play the bass clarinet, the instrument must go between my knees in order to be played properly. The fabric of a skirt gets caught in the keys and holes, causing the instrument to be off pitch.)

Depends on the location– some schools (like private schools) still require skirts, but a lot has changed indeed.

I mean, I can argue this both ways– just look how many different kinds of girl's jeans there are, and yet skirts are uniquely female.

And yet there are so many considerations when wearing skirts– the length, how much of the leg is seen, how much of a slit/mobility there is, whether you have to wear some kind of hosery or stockings, how you get in and out of a car, what's a lady-like posture, and how do you bend to pick something up.

It's endless the things to learn– but those things are feminine.

Is it that women have gotten tired of the feminine, or what?

You may be right- in their trying to be so "liberated" and thus like men, women rejected the truly feminine.

I think a lot of it was cultural. However, it can still be applied to our culture today. What was taught back in Bible times about not "cross dressing" as it is called today, can still apply for today's culture. We are still not to cross dress. I believe the issue of pants is a simple one. In my opinion, I believe women wearing pants is OK, but I think we need to be VERY mindful of how tight and low cut (in the waist) we are buying our pants.

The reason many advocate skirts only, [for women] is because it hides the woman's figure and keeps it only for the husband or future husband; which in my opinion is not a bad idea. It also hides the shape of the backside from full view. Again, not a bad idea. I don't practice this, but I do agree with it. :) It's one of those things where I think discernemtn needs to come into play.

I think that society has sold women short by telling them to be like men– there's a beauty and a power in being feminine.

Definitely, Christin, skirts are more feminine and pertain to a lady in our culture.  You can't but think "lady" when you see a person in a dress.  That's part of the reason I find cross-dressing individuals as an assault to my sensibilities.

Should we encourage ladies to wear skirts?  Exclusively?

Since pants are so much more convenient, how do we encourage the next generation of women to wear them if the women of today do not?

Hello!

I just wanted to pop in and say that I wrote a blog post on this issue a couple of months ago. My opinion summarized is that I do not think that pants are immodest for women as long as they are sufficiently feminine and the TOPS ARE LONG ENOUGH, which is the think I don't see very often. Pants can be modest, and they can be feminine, but it's hard to do both at the same time without the long top.

I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but there's my two cents.

God bless!

Hannah

I think the same thing could be said for skirt combos– you can still have the problem if you don't wear a shirt long enough to cover the distance between the clothing.

Care to share your thoughts in a guest post?

Oh, that is definitely true–and it, of course, depends on the skirt–but my opinion is that women's pants just by nature are too fitting a round the "rear area." I don't feel comfortable in pants unless I'm wearing a top that goes roughly the same length as my arms when they're down at my sides.

Me? *Stutters* Um, well, sure! Is it okay if I use the same post that I did on my blog, or would you want me to change/condense it?

God bless you all.

It's up to you, you can reread it and see if it would work in our environment, or you can just put it in as normal.  Use the contact form to e-mail me if you're interested.
