Are Photos of Girls Laying Down Immodest?

Anonymous asked in comments:

Is there something more provocative about lying down photos than non-lying down photos?

(Note: Being a female I will never totally understand the workings of a male mind. I trust my father’s judgment. I am not a bit angry or frustrated with my Dad for making this “rule.” Neither is my friend. I’m just curious about this whole laying down thing.)

What do you think?  What are the struggles, if any, with "laying down" photos, and are they inherently immodest?

My next post deals with a very much related topic, so I have a slight insight in this.

The male mind is very imaginative. The fewer "steps" the mind has to go through in order to think of or "see in the mind" something inappropriate, the more tempting it is for us. Seeing a girl laying down removes half the steps – the rest can come too easily for some guys.

I guess it depends more on the guy.

So say we all.

I should clarify: It' not about laying down poses; it is more about the male mind, similar to my "Gollum" post (http://isthismodest.com/2008/1…..ocritical/).

So say we all.

I've added some photos to the Flickr feed that have girls laying down in them.  Perhaps looking at them will help explain some of the problem.

Note, these are the only borderline photos of girls laying down I can find.  Most of them show cleavage.

There are those who think that an outfit with a low neckline is next to pornography.  There are also those who find nothing at all objectionable about The Birth of Venus (the artwork).

Being very well acquainted with the male mind, let me clarify.

There are plenty of ways of laying down that don't stir up imaginings.  At the same time, there are photos of girls who are standing up that can lead to these inappropriate thoughts.

This would be a case where the photographer and the subject would impact whether or not the photo is immodest, like all photos.  If the image comes across as inviting for immodest purposes, then it becomes an immodest photo.  If, on the other hand, the subject is simply smiling and giving a sense of humor, then it becomes modest (it's a given that the clothing is modest already in these examples).

Also, and here's where the line gets fuzzy, the intention of the viewer of the photograph has something to contribute to it.  One may look at a photo of a modestly dressed girl lying down and think it's a marvelous tribute to the beauty of women everywhere.  Another may look at the same photo and begin to undress her in his mind.

I hope that is a little clearer than I think I wrote it.

It's tough trying to explain what goes on in our mail mind, isn't it?

I think that, unfortunately, a lot of it has to do with setting and frame of mind– along with some biological situations.  In any case, laying down can lead to guys thinking about things that happen while laying down, so (in my mind) you should take that into account if you're going to have that pose taken.

Well at least you y'all are trying!! That's more than can be said for some guys! I wonder how many times in history males have offered their famous line, "I just can't explain it!"

(I mean no disrespect, instead, I find it amusing.) Laugh
