This is beautiful top. I really like the crochet lace and ruffle detail on the front. It makes the top more feminine without being immodest.

The yellow bow around the waist is a nice touch, though some may not prefer to have their waist cinched up. I think it would look great even without the belt, which would also be more comfortable.

Priced at $32.25, it’s more than I would pay for a top, but it is very pretty and would make a nice option for attending a summer wedding, paired with a nice skirt and heels.

The sleeves are pretty short, it’s almost sleeveless. Normally I prefer to have longer sleeves, but I think I would be fine wearing this.

The neckline looks like it might be a little low, but that could easily be remedied with a higher white cami or tank under it – the fabric looks like it is sheer enough that you would need to wear something under it anyway.

Here is a cute top that is dressy and looks comfortable too. The waist is fitted, so that might be an issue for some, but I think overall it is modest.

When the sleeves are big like this, I like to wear a tank or cami underneath of the same color so nothing shows when I raise my arms.

The necklace is cute and eye catching, but I try to avoid necklaces that are too long because they draw eyes away from my face.

I really like the sleeves because they are pretty long, yet they are loose enough that it wouldn’t be too warm on a hot day.

This top can be dressed up or down. With a pair of jeans or a casual skirt, it would be comfortable for every day. With black pants or skirt like in the picture, it’s dressy enough for a more formal occasion.

Other than hair length, one of the first things that you can teach young children about how to tell the difference between a guy and a girl is that when someone’s wearing a skirt, they’re feminine.  It’s one of those things that, in our culture, are pretty well defined.

Yet, as with all pieces of clothing, it’s easy for something that’s feminine and beautiful to be worn in a way or at a length that can communicate a message entirely different from the feminine and beautiful message that skirts usually convey.

Miniskirts are skirts with a hemline well above the knees, and no longer than 4 inches below the behind.  They came to popularity in 1960, but still remain today.  Mary Quant is credited with creating them, but they have been around ever since.

Why is it that most teenage girls and some that are older wear them?  To show off their legs, because they think that it makes them older or more sexy, as well as the attention that they gather.

Even in the 1970s the feminists realized that a short skirt objectified the wearer, and the fashion industry returned to midi and maxi skirts because of it.

So, what should a modest woman wear?  I think it’s pretty clear that short skirts convey one type of message about the wearer.  So it would benefit women to consider the message their skirt length is sending.  Can they find immodest long skirts?  Sure, but there’s no mistaking that the length of the skirt sends a message—short skirts are immodest.

Fortunately, there are many great modest skirt stores out there, and they come in some great styles!

The shirt I picked out was a cream plus sized shirt. I was pregnant at the time and I loved not having the extra material covering my belly. It was extremely comfortable.

The material this shirt is made from is so soft. The neckline was high enough not to show too much cleavage, which I appreciated. I also liked the fact that it didn’t bunch all up and stayed in place under my other shirt.

I think wearing one of these as an under layer really gives a nice fashion look.

The company’s shipping was incredibly quick. They seem like a great, friendly company to work with. I plan on buying a different colored half tee in the future.

As many of you know, Christa Taylor got out of the modest clothing business to take up a passion for photography.  Visitors to Christa-Taylor.com are redirected to that new site, and while Empowered Traditionalist is still featuring modest fashion and beauty, her focus is on photography.

However, we here at Is This Modest can’t help but be happy for Christa, and her fiancée Dan, on their recent engagement.  Christa has been a long supporter of Modest Clothing and she’s personally helped in providing some images, ideas, and content for this site, as well as linking and helping on some behinds the scenes stuff.  She was always easy to get a hold of, and is a joy to work with.

It’s alarming.  The fact that you can’t go out to a gathering, even in winter, without getting a sight that you figure you shouldn’t be seeing.

But worse, when you’re out shopping you notice that this is the current trend, that this is what society is telling women that they should look like, and it’s not going away soon.

Now, I know that there are some that argue that other cultures have no problem with women going around topless, and I know that there’s a function for that part of women’s anatomy that has nothing to do with what a man thinks of it.  After all, I have a wife that’s breastfeeding a new bundle of joy.

However, I don’t agree that the only purpose for a woman’s breasts is giving nourishment to their children, and I have it on good authority that this is not simply a cultural thing.

Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love

– Proverbs 5:19

This passage references “the wife of your youth”.  The husband is instructed two different ways in this passage:

1. Your wife’s physical features are for the enjoyment of the husband alone (Pro 5:17)
2. You should never embrace the bosom of an adulteress (Pro 5:20)

If this area of a woman’s body were not a source of attraction, why spend so much time focused on it—thousands of years before Western Culture is on the scene.

For that reason, I would believe that it would be fitting for a young woman to reserve the view of her breasts to her husband alone—something that he should protect and fight for.  Anything else is a man not deeming as precious the very thing that should be his alone: his wife.

Part of the problem with modesty today is that husbands are not taking the fact that their wife’s body is a blessing to them seriously, so instead of wanting to protect their wife’s modesty, they choose instead to display it openly.  I’m not saying that women should be considered an object, but what I am saying is that a wife should be cherished to the point that a man’s desire is to the point of jealousy for his wife—that her body would be for his eyes only.

To that end, I would encourage something like Chemisettes by Anne  that allow you not only to have a shirt that would be immodest anywhere outside the home to be made modest with a simple piece of cloth that would cover without adding an extra layer.  Or, by all means, add a layer or a half shirt.  Any of these situations would work.

The point is to reserve for the marriage what belongs to one another, and not to advertise to everyone else what does not belong to them.

For one thing, it’s really hard to visit the main stores and not spend a fortune on clothing—and then have to do something to make it modest.

The other thing that I’ve realized is that the half shirt companies and tee shirt extenders are a pregnant and nursing mom’s best friend.

Shapes don’t just spring back, and having something that covers your bottom half (for when you have to feed in public or you haven’t quite gotten back down to your size) or top half (for when that cute top from Motherhood doesn’t quite cover as well as you’d like) is a godsend.

So, I’ll be checking out some modest extenders in the near future—and she’s liked the extenders from Blush Accessories in the past.  What I would like to find, though, is an extender with a lace bottom—I’ve seen them as bottoms of camis but I figure someone must have translated this into an extender.  Right?

There are a lot of great choices of colors and different uplifting messages about your spouse to choose from. I chose the pink short-sleeve junior-fitted shirt that says, “My husband rocks!” I like the script font and love the message!

I really appreciate the length on the shirt – it comes way below the waist far down on the hips so there is no issue for a girl if she were to bend over. And the neckline is perfect for me – a crewneck – so I don’t have any issues with modesty at all with the cut. I like the weight of the material that Union28 uses. It’s not too thin or see-through at all.

The junior-fit is a slimmer fit than the ladies’ cut. I usually wear an XS (0-2) or even a girls’ size 14-16 on top. I was thankful that the site suggested ordering at least a size larger than normal because these shirts do run small. I ordered the 4-6 and was glad that I did. The fit is snug. I think with the junior-fit some people may even want to order 2 sizes larger than normal potentially. So if you would rather not have something so form-fitting, the ladies’ cut may be a better choice for you.

I am happy with the value Union28 gets for the money. The shirt I have is well-made and reasonably priced. I have to give it a big THUMBS UP!

“Where have you been?” Laura exclaimed.  “I thought you’d been kidnapped!”

“What do you mean, I just ran to the back for customer service because I saw a small tear in this skirt and wondered if I could get a discount.  Then I came back to find you but you weren’t around.  I figured you must have paid for what you wanted and went out to the car, so I went out to look for you!  I was just about to call the police!”  Tracy explained.

“That’s funny, I thought the same about you,” Laura replied.  Just then Laura’s phone chirped.  She picked it up and took a look at it, “That’s Noah.  He’s wondering if we’re going to be out much longer because he’s ordered pizza and wants us to pick it up on the way home.”

“Men.  I tell ya,” Tracy responded.

“Well, I guess we’d better go pay for what we’ve picked and get home,” Laura replied.  “I mean, who wants cold pizza?”

Just then an announcement came over the loudspeaker, “We’d like to congratulate Anne S. for winning the October 2011 New Creation Apparel giveaway at Is This Modest. Hope that you’ll come back next month to try again!”

It’s hard to find many sites catering to Modest Activewear.  Most activewear is meant to be tight to keep things from moving and to wick away sweat.  Lucy has a couple of skirts that they use for activewear—perhaps we need a whole other series on this.

Destination Maternity has skirts, shirts and other products that grow with you while you’re expecting that pending arrival. Much of what you find at their site is expensive, because of the belly panels and the extra material, so keep in mind you’re probably going to spend over $100 for a quality skirt from them.

What you really need to do here is check out the site and find something that you like.  Then, sign up with the various sites for their deals, or put them on a list of things that you need your husband to get you!

This poncho looks comfortable, all the way around.

The length is nice, and it covers everything.  It comes down past the knees at the point, which is great.  The length on the arms is good.  The neck provides a lot of warmth!

This would be a great item to wear in the autumn—as long as it’s not too long that you’d find yourself caught or sitting on it.

Do any of you own a poncho?  Do you like it?

This tie-back cardigan looks comfortable, and is a nice color (though it comes in four different colors. 

Some things I noticed:

• Button downs can be tricky, but the spacing here is small—meaning less gaping.
• Button down also allows for being more immodest in private—a plus for us husbands out here.
• The shirt seems to get longer in the back.
• That means that you might sit on it when you sit down.
• You shouldn’t have anything exposed when you bend over.

All in all, a great cardigan.  What did you notice?
