CollegeMany women have chosen a life of modesty, and they have done so for multiple different reasons.

In 2009, we asked the readers of this site why they have chosen modesty.  In these posts we’ll share with you the reasons that they chose modesty as an encouragement to you in your decisions as well as a challenge to uphold each other.

Can you give us a brief biography?

I come from a family of 6 children (5 girls, one boy), and am the third in the line-up. I was raised in a Christian home starting from age 2 or so. I’m going to a junior college studying music and ASL. I’m constantly seeking to do what Christ would have me do. Despite failing miserably, God has been faithful and very merciful to me.

How long have you been modest?

Sort of all my life, but my standards of what is modest have changed drastically over the years. In the beginning modest meant simply no mid-riffs pretty much. Seriously though, for about the last 5-6 years.

Why did you first decide to dress modestly?

To honor God and to avoid being a lustful temptation for any guys. I want to save myself for my future husband…whoever he may be.

What motivates you to continue to dress modestly?

What I’ve seen and been told by some less than desirable guys concerning how they think about girls when they dress in a variety of different ways. I don’t want them to think such things about me. Also, I feel it honors my Lord when I dress modestly and I want to honor my husband (future).

Do you believe that how you dress effects how you think of yourself? Why?

Definitely. When wearing a skirt I tend to walk differently and carry myself in an entirely different way compared to when I’m wearing pants. Plus…different outfits make me feel awkward so I avoid them.

What would you say to encourage someone else to be modest?

To seek God and how HE would have you dress. Don’t ever do it simply because someone else said you better do it or else. If you feel a certain conviction about dressing modestly, stick to it and don’t go back as it’s a slippery slope leading to compromise after compromise…I speak from experience.

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

  1. this is all very wonderful advice and it was great to read about all these different people!!
Victoria/Justice Pirate´s last post ..MissElainious!!! interview with a woman making a difference

  2. I began to dress more modestly after my 9 year old son was hit by a car, but survived. In order to thank Hashem (G*d) I took on another mitzvah (good deed) and decided to cover my hair. That was 13 years ago. At some point I decided to wear longer sleeves, longer skirts, and higher necklines. And at some point, the idea of wearing a regular bathing suit in front of my sons or other men, became ludicrous. Hence the founding of Marsea Modest Swimwear…Cover what you want – in Style!!. http://www.MarSeamodest.com
