Sleeveless SheathThis week we’re looking at online retailer Chadwicks.  Not a modesty store by name, I was surprised to find that there were 18 pages of dresses to choose from, and many would be what we would consider modest.  This week we’ll look at seven of the offerings that they have in their dress selection from just the first two pages.  I have a feeling we’ll have to come back and do another review sometime.

The Sleeveless Sheath pictured right is a good example of a what could be considered a “little black dress” except that this one would also be pretty modest.

Other than the fact that this is sleeveless, so the shoulders are shown, the holes for the arms are high, the neckline is high, and the dress comes down to the knees.

And that would be my only problem—the length is a little short on this model, so that means extra care would need to be taken when sitting and getting up.  Other than that, I’m having a hard time finding any problem with this dress.

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

I wouldn’t worry about the fact that it seems short on the model, because she looks crazy tall.

I like this! It could be worn in a professional setting as well as semi-casual. It’s hard to find sleeveless things that have small enough arm holes, so the fact that this apparently features such a thing is lovely.
And I agree with lola… pretty much all the models on websites are crazy tall, and she looks to be as such. In any case, most retailers feature the length of the item in inches which can be used to determine what the length would be on a real person.

I really like formal looking dresses, but my wife always makes a good point– how many opportunities are there to wear such things? With this dress, it’s a tad more formal than every day wear, but it can also be worn in less formal settings. So you could wear it to church or work. I may have to surprise her with one of these.

      • Candra says:

Agreed. It’s not so formal that the only occasion you could wear it to would be a wedding, so that’s nice.

Is black really a popular color for weddings? Isn’t black usually mourning?

          • Lola says:

Sure you can wear black to weddings! Especially evening weddings, but even for daytime black can be appropriate. Not this pinstripe fabric, it’s way too businessy, but the solid black they have available is nice. The pinstripe dress looks weird by itself, I think you should could it with the matching blazer for work, though.

I just haven’t seen that many weddings with black as the color– many more in pastel of some kind. And I think that the black is a better choice than the pinstripe as well.

Well, my sister’s wedding colors were black and blue. She had the bridesmaids wear black and the groomsmen were in midnight blue. Black isn’t for mourning anymore, it’s just a nice basic color that you can wear again. Unlike, say, puce or cornflower. Weddings are definitely leaning away from peeps colors these days, which I think is really nice.

The goofy guy in me saw "black and blue" and well… I think that we did a deep shade of purple for our wedding (though the flowers ended up magenta). I can’t remember what was worn at my brothers’ weddings, but I know that there’s definitely a trend to get as many people in the bridal party as possible.

I’m a big fan of pinstripes! This is a cute dress and I think it would look marvelous with a little sweater or shrug. (I don’t do sleeveless.)

  4. Erin says:

I don”t do pinstripe or sleeveless. A sweater would definitely be in order. It is a modest dress, though.

Classy dress. But just me personally I don’t like men’s pinstripe…unless it’s on a man :) Nothing wrong with it, it’s just something I’ve learned about myself!
