Scarf Style #8: Mock Cowl

I first found out about cowls roughly a year ago, when a friend gave me a fuzzy, pink handmade thing that looked like a cross between a scarf and a turtleneck collar. I wore it once—and I’ve been cowl-crazy ever since. They can be so wide that you could pull one up over your head like a hood, or just a few inches thick, like a typical scarf. But the neat thing is that they don’t have ends that might unwind themselves or fall into the pasta. That gets a thumbs-up from me.

I can see your consternation. Here I’ve spent two months extrapolating on the glories of scarves and why you should so totally get one, and now (here you hold up an arm draped with six or seven) I inform you that there’s something better? What’s up with this? Can we say RIP-OFF???

Well, hold your horses. Cowls ARE awesome. They’ll do a wonderful patch-up job on a ton of outfits, and if you’re into making your own, they take much less time and material than the average scarf. But here’s a way you can transform your scarf INTO a cowl. Or at least the closest it’ll come.

Just hold your scarf’s end in hand and wrap the rest down the length of your forearm and back up, as if you were coiling a lasso or putting away the vacuuuuum cleaner. (Oops—did I use too many ‘u’s? I never could figure out the point of that word.) Then you put it around your neck and you can either tie your ends around so it looks like a wreath with a little bow at the bottom/side/wherever, or you can just…sort of…tuck them and wrap them until they stay…or fall down to the middle, like *cough* mine did in shown picture. *Sheepish grin* Well, you can’t actually SEE the ends, can you? There. I thought not. Voila.

Well, friends, that is the last scarf style in my file. I hope I’ve not only shown you eight ways to wrap a scarf around your neck, but inspired you to think outside the box with any accessory you might have floating around. Also, I hope I’ve encouraged those of you who are in the middle of a mindset switch towards modesty and don’t have the budget to wipe out and replenish your entire closet and chest of drawers. Believe me: I don’t either. God bless y’all!
