When approaching the topic of modesty, one would think that there would be two distinct groups of people:

  • Those that want to be modest.
  • Those that do not want to be modest.

If this were the case, then having a conversation on the issue would be pretty straightforward.  The challenge is that both of these groups have subgroups, and within those subgroups are sets of people with very passionate beliefs.

Over the next few Tuesdays we’ll look at the problems of modesty:  what they are, why these views are held and how to over come them.

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 4 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 2 years ago.

I am a mother of 2 girls and I find one of the hardest things about dressing modestly is actually finding modest clothes. It is hard work! Sometimes you don’t want to have to go to sooo many stores – it would be easier to just find something anywhere. We have found that thrift stores are a better source and also ordering online.

There are some guidelines in the scriptures about what is modest, but it’s not totally clear and most of those guidelines are in the Old Testament so some people don’t think it’s valid. People have different definitions of what modesty is. What it really comes down to is sin. Our flesh just doesn’t want to obey.

To some degree I think that modesty is defined by absolutes, and to some degree by the culture. I mean, Old Testament men wore robes– you wouldn’t catch that today. Even New Testament women were told to avoid certain hairstyles for showiness or because it linked to prostitution. So I think there’s definitely some guidelines. Especially that last part… Hmm, that seems like a good topic for a post: "If dressing like temple prostitutes was wrong, what about today?" Gotta come up with a better title.

It is hard to find modest clothes. The struggle is always worth it for me when I find something that is modest! :) I’m interested in the other articles. #Feb2011NCARating
