Miss England Finalist Katy Baxter

Behind this dress is an interesting story.

It was a stunning dress back in 1966. And in 2009, it’s still a winner.

The silver frock first worn by Katy Baxter’s granny has helped the teenager through to the finals of Miss England.

Katy, 18, had to wear something ‘recycled’ for her semi-final against 57 other girls a fortnight ago.

She said: ‘You could wear an old dress or make up something yourself from old crisp packets, as one girl did.

‘My mother had just had Gran’s old dress dry-cleaned two weeks earlier and she suggested that I tried it on. It fitted perfectly and I absolutely loved it.’  [Daily Mail – Teen sails into Miss England wearing the same dress her grandma was modelling in 1966]

What’s interesting is that this dress does not differ much from the styles we see today.  The length is a little short (about an inch above the knee) and it’s sleeveless with a little shoulder showing.  It has a touch of translucency going on.

It has been the case, throughout history, that women have sought to see where they can get away with showing skin without going too far.  Not all women, mind you, but many flirt with the borderline in an attempt to dress enough to get attention.

Attention can be intoxicating—it’s something that we crave from the time we are born into our adulthood.  We like to be noticed, we want to be well liked.  It’s evident in how many people will willingly follow the ins and outs and ups and downs of celebrities—people no different from them except they were able to get a job that gets a lot of attention.

We need to be aware and in control of this desire if we are to master modesty.  It’s not that we want to be a chameleon and blend in where ever we find ourselves, but that we don’t want attention drawn to us for the wrong reasons.  We don’t want to be a slave to attention.

Because once you have as your goal getting attention, you’ll be willing to make more compromises to get it.

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

This is a great post. We all need reminders to help keep us on the right track. “Little” things like this can easily pop up in our lives if we are not paying close attention.

Very good post. We can get hooked on wanting attention. Especially if a young woman has relationship problems with her father and never got the attention from him that she needed. She’ll go looking for it elsewhere.

I agree that relationship problems and a girls view of her father can factor into this issue. However, it can still be a struggle for girls who do have good relationships with their fathers. Attention is one of those things that it’s so easy to desire and try to get–our fallen human nature makes sure of that.
