Is This Modest?

MInTheGap: Yes, it has decent width straps, the front comes up nice and high– this is one of the better formals I’ve seen– and on someone that’s in a pageant no less! Good job!

Foy: A lot of time, sashes can be immodest because they pronounce cleavage. But, this girl isn’t immodest because she doesn’t show any cleavage. Modest!

Your Turn…

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 4 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 2 years ago.

I have to take issue with your prejudice against cleavage and the outline or hint of a busom. I am a somewhat busty/curvy girl (see here, or not), and the only way I could prevent showing any outline or form would be if I wore some sort of burlap sack. Pretty much no matter what I wear would always be immodest in your eyes. Sorry if I’m making everyone “stumble,” but I’m not going to dress exclusively in tents.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing clothes that fit. We can’t hide that we are women, and trying to do that tends to turn out frumpy. I believe we don’t need to overtly display our bodies. Instead, we want to go for feminine.

I do not think that they are trying to be prejudiced against cleavage, but it is rather that they are naturally prejudiced TOWARD it, and they want to avoid it. This is why they talk about it. Cleavage is an automatic eye-magnet for guys. I have noticed that it is easier for me to talk to men (as part of my job/school/etc) when I am wearing something that covers and doesn’t emphasize too much, because they don’t have to fight themselves to look at my face and listen to what I am saying.

Also, M, to me those straps look like they are chiffon, which is slightly see-through. Does that have any effect on the modesty of it, or is it just the lines of the straps that matter?

Lola: God made all our bodies different; being critical of people because of their bodies is wrong, I agree. I’ve tried my best to ignore what the body does to accentuate the clothes, and instead focus on what the clothes are doing to accentuate the body. Personally, I have trouble with clothing that is designed in such a way to purposely “show off” the bust; which, in any sense, can be considered immodest to one degree or another.

A couple months ago, a woman who had designed blouses for a living commented on a Quick Review, saying that many designers create shirts with that idea in mind – so it is intentional by them.

Whatever you wear is up to you; it’s your decision. But I would rather paint the worst possible picture of what a guy might think than the most innocent. I never want to have a girl come on here and say “You said this was modest! But my boyfriend thought it showed way too much, and told me not to wear it.”

Instead, by showing the worst possible situation, a girl can say, “Ok. I can wear this dress tonight if I want. But, I need to remember: this area of the dress can be tempting for guys. I have to be careful about that.”

Now, regarding the Quick Review: I said what I said because I think it’s true: Sashes are usually used to accentuate cleavage. Your eyes are attracted to the words written upon them; and, the location of the cloth itself draws attention to several areas of the chest. I guess what I was trying to get across was that sashes are usually used in an immodest way, but not in this photo.
