0191copy11When I was a little girl I loved playing dress up. My favorite outfit was a white, flowing dress that was too big for me. I would wear socks on my hands for gloves, and I would dance around pretending to be Cinderella. Even now that I’ve grown up a bit, I still occasionally have the opportunity to play dress up with a few little friends of mine. There is just something about wearing a big poofy dress that makes me feel oh so lovely! However, being homeschooled all my life, I have never been to a banquet, prom, or other event that required formal attire. The ‘dressiest’ dress I’ve ever really had occasion to wear was the one that I wore as a bridesmaid in my sister’s wedding.

When we began the search for the perfect bridesmaid dresses, we did not realize what a difficult road was ahead of us. Store after store was full of nothing but strapless, short, tight, and very vividly colored formal gowns. Although though trying on immodest dress after immodest dress was rather fun at first (remember, I love dressing up) it became rather tedious when we started to realize that there really was not anything out there that perfectly fit the criteria that we wanted. After months of searching, we ended up having to sew an insert into the low neckline of the one dress that worked the best.

Dressing modestly, especially for a formal event, can be very challenging. However, the reward is well worth the effort. In dressing modestly we save ourselves for our spouse (or future spouse), which is pleasing to the Lord. To be pleasing in the sight of God is the greatest any person can be.

My mother and two of my sisters are excellent seamstresses so we usually make our formal dresses when we need them. We often will combine different patterns to make the dress modest. It is totally worth it once you’re finished!
