It’s a tale as old as time. Guy meets girl. Girl likes guy. School throws a formal.

The girl starts to prepare:

  • She spends hours looking through catalogs at dresses.
  • She goes to stores looking at gowns.
  • She and her friend hit four different stores looking for the perfect shoes.
  • She books an appointment with a hair stylist.
  • She finds some time to get a manicure (and probably a pedicure).
  • She and her friends talk about what they should get him, and how cute he is.

The guy goes out, rents a tux in the right color, looks for the best flowers at the grocery store and purchases some Tic Tacs while he’s there.

Ok, so maybe he does more than that, but the formal is an interesting time in the lives of young people, and with the prom season coming fast upon us, we here at Is This Modest? want to take the opportunity to help you find the perfect dress, know what to avoid, and we may even talk about the different formal times in your life as well as discuss some of the memories we have of these events.

So if you haven’t already subscribed yet, please do because you won’t want to miss this month!

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

Several years ago I went to a homeschool formal. I have pretty high modesty standards, but I also didn’t have time that year to sew a dress. So, I went on a shopping excursion. A local consignment shop ended up being my best friend once again. I found a lovely dress in an elegant fabric that fit me perfectly. That is, what part of me it covered. It was strapless with a back that was a little bit too low for me. My mom ended up adding wide ribbon straps and making a small shrug. In the end it was quite pretty and very modest without a ton of effort.

(I’m the one in the silvery outfit.) :-)

Oh my….I couldn’t stand prom. Those are days that I’m so glad to have behind me, lol.

Thank the LORD I don’t have any of this to worry about and that I’m waiting until the “big prom” = wedding to pick out a dress.

  4. Foy says:

    Never had a prom.

  5. Katie says:

For my own, I wore what had been my aunt’s prom dress twenty-five years earlier- solid yellow with a halter top. I also had a halter-top, brand-new blue ball gown for my now-husband’s prom. I still have the blue one and could resurrect it almost ten years later given an occasion to suit!

Well, we made my dress last year for prom, and we’re making it again this year. I just wore cheap shoes from the dollar store (because, honestly, what girl dances in her high heels at prom? Very few do.). So… yeah, prom isn’t that big of a deal to me, but I enjoyed it when I went last year and I plan to enjoy it again this year.

LOL! I like the comparison you made between the guys and the girls. Shows who is more visually oriented! I’ll never go to a prom, but I do dress up on occasion and like reading about it. :)
