Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

  1. Whoa! I really like the red wedding gown that’s on Kathleen’s bridal. It is brilliant.

  2. Kylie says:

A Breastfeeding top that is very modest as well as stylish is the Fertile Mind Corporate Wrap.

  3. Just thought I’d let you know that this blog is great! In the world we live in today it is getting harder and harder to find advocates of modest clothing, and I think there is a large population of women (and men) out there who appreciate it. Thanks for what you do and keep the modest fashions coming!

  4. Michelle says:

Many orthodox Jewish women wear very modest clothes but I don’t thing there is a rule about it. only an unspoken agreement.

it is unlikely one would see orthodox Jewish women wearing skimpy clothing.

Perhaps someone can enlighten us if there is such a rule.

    • Yosefa says:

There is a Talmudic rule which branches from the commandment that a man shall not dress like a woman and a woman shall not dress like a man. Your body is God’s temple and should be treated as such which is why there are no tatoos for men or women and you are only allowed to pierce your ear (women) 1 hole per ear at most (some Hasidic communities do allow this because there is a law/commandment that you are to leave the worl the way you came in)
Manner of dress-besides being God’s, nobody is to see you but your husband and until your married-only you therefore you cover your body because it does not define who you are, and is pricate only for God and your husband. There are also Kabbalist teachings for these as well. Too long to explain here but actually yes there are multiple rules and laws.

  5. Leah says:

Orthodox women follow Jewish Law which provides guidelines as to what they need to cover (knees, elbows and cleavage, etc), and since skirts are always more modest than pants many (possibly most) Orthodox women wear skirts all the time. However, as in any religion, there are different local rulings and different levels of observance.

    • Unity says:

The halacha is to “hide” the thighs instead of “covering” them. Pants cannot be worn because pants do not hide the thighs. Pants show off the shape of the thighs and thus, not hide them.

  6. Tom M. says:

I just heard on the radio that the thong is out. Thank God!

  7. I would like to suggest a couple of other sites that have selected more modest than usual dresses.

    http://blackwhitewomensdresses.com

    http://womenssundresses.net

    http://womenscocktaildresses.net

Of course modesty is always relative. Some may think one thing is modest while others believe it isn’t. Just look at what women wear in Arab countries. They cover every square inch of skin. So even showing wrists or ankles is considered immodest by them because of their culture.

The sites above try to keep dresses at the knee or below and avoid showing too much cleavage etc

    Great list, thanks!

  14. Thanks for this list. It’s getting harder and harder to find modest clothes these days. One doesn’t need to be half naked to look good. Leave some for the imagination – it’s normally better than the real thing ! Haha !

  15. Emma says:

Thank you for sharing all these modest websites. I have found a favorite of mine. http://www.sierrabrooke.com I really liked many of the tops, skirts, and dresses at Sierra Brooke. They also had wonderful customer service and fast shipping. Thanks for sharing!

  16. What a great idea for a site! I have a daughter who has been modest her whole life (she’s only 8) and all of a sudden she wants to look and dress like her favorite rock stars! Thank you for this great site, the little girls skirts are adorable, and wholesome!
    Thank You,
    Lisa@womenscargoshorts.org

  17. Thanks for the list of modest clothing sites – but really how does one define “modest” ?

Skirt below the knee, at the knee, 1 inch above the knee ? It likely varies from person to person and country to country.

In any case modesty is always better.

This is a great list! There are many more, of course, and some of these are outdated and don’t exist anymore. Any chance of an update any time soon?

  22. Melissa says:

Yes, that is a pretty good list! I would also like to see it updated. I have a list of clothing sites on my web-site, most of which are modest, if that would help your list any! http://clothedwithscarlet.blogspot.com/ Look down to the side under Seamstress & Clothing Sources.

  26. Phil says:

There isn’t much in the way of secular arguments for modesty. If we can agree on that, then there is a starting point. I think if we want to find the line between what is modest and what is immodest then we need only to look towards G-d to find it. Originally, Christian modesty was based on Jewish modesty. Follow it back to the source. What was accepted as modest for ancient jews is still pretty much the same as today. Paul(Shaul) the apostle, despite all his alledged antisemetic teachings, was a Rabbi(under Gamaliel) and observant Orthodox Jew til the day he died. My point is that Paul would have lived with and embraced Jewish modesty and expected nothing less of his converts/followers. I’ve heard the argument from Christians about “liberty” and also the “that was a different time” argument. Both are unconvincing I’m afraid. When it comes to the human body, Christians are indistinguishable from Jews, Muslims, etc. Common sense tells us that if G-d deemed it unholy and impure for Jews to draw attention to their bodies instead of their mind and soul then would not an all loving G-d also have the same expectation of all his children, since they share the same likeness? Especially considering that modesty in dress is not considered something given only unto Jews to keep in covenant. The “different time” argument falls apart when you look at the standards of the Sumaritans, and especially the Roman occupiers! Modesty was virtually nonexistent in Roman society and their habits of nude priestesses and communal bathing(and orgies) are but 2 examples that would make most any modern people blush. Yet, these were contemporaries of JC and the second temple in Jerusalem. It’s about holiness and the line is quite clear if we drop all the excuses and pretense, and choose to see it. :)

IT’s rare to find an article about modest clothing options – what with the choices out there it’s hard to find the right fit. Thanks for this article!
