I always find it amusing to consider what was considered indecent exposure in times past and what we’ll accept today.  In the beginning of the last century, a woman was arrested on the beach for exposing her elbows and knees in a bathing suit.  Today, the question is “how much can I charge for the least amount of material.

This Arlo & Janis comic highlights this exact point in a round-a-bout way:

Indeed!

Why is it that women have accepted showing more of their bodies to men?  Why is it that they have allowed themselves to be objectified instead of showing off the inner beauty?

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

  1. That is a funny comic. Society has made it acceptable for almost anything! It’s sad really.

  2. Brackets says:

Personally, when I dress myself, I don’t give a [rip] what the men around me are thinking. It’s my body, I’ll do with it what I like. I can show, or not show as much of it as I want. Men can stare all they like. We’re creatures with higher brain functions so I’m certain that your average man can restrain himself from jumping on some poor unsuspecting woman just because he can see more of her legs than he thinks is "modest", or because her breasts jiggled as she walked. Protip: Breasts move. They’re made of soft tissue, not concrete.

  3. Erin says:

For Christians it is very important that we don’t cause our brothers to stumble. In other words, not helping their minds to wander or to have improper thoughts. It creaps me out to have males give me the head-to-toe glance. Even around my own brothers I want to dress modestly.

  4. Lady Abigail says:

In times past they had special “bath houses” in the water. The women would wear a coat over their suit until they got to the bath house and then take it off to swim (in their very modest suits by today’s standard). That way they would be far out into the water away from other people before they got into swim. How things have changed!

Yes, it is amazing how things have changed! In a relatively short time, too. Very sad.

  6. Erin says:

Swim suits are very immodest these days. In the good old days, the women had to wear stockings to go swimming. I don’t think I would like that too much. A modest swim suit on someone else at the beach is always a comfort. That means there is someone else out there that cares about what they are showing off.

I didn’t know the part about stockings, Erin! Wow. Doesn’t that just sound so weird? Oh well, at least it was modest. :P
