When a woman knows that she is going to be looked at, she spends a lot of time preparing for it.  It’s a necessity that she works out, that she tans, that she diets.  The fact that a woman knows that guys are watching1 prompts her to go to certain ends to make sure that she’s presentable and attractive.

So, on one hand I’m sure that modest girls really ruffle their feathers.

Unlike Them, You’re Not on Display

  • They live in a world where they set themselves up to constantly be evaluated by their looks.
  • They believe that they have to have the right muscle tone.
  • They run calculations to figure out their Waist-to-Hip Ratio.
  • They go under expensive surgical procedures or subject themselves to humiliating reality shows that either dress up what they got, or force them to change it.

In previous generations, and some times for formals today, they would subject themselves to body altering clothing, or in other cultures actually go through processes to make their necks longer or feet smaller.

They believe that they have to look a certain way, and they want men to see them that way.

But you, modest woman, are not like them.  You prefer not to show your body, and therefore there can be a degree of contempt.  There’s no way of knowing your muscle tone or the color of your thighs/calves.  Wearing some kind of shape enhancing device is of no use, because you’re not about your shape—and though you aren’t garnering the attention of men, you’re noticed.

You’re noticed for who you are, not what you are, and that can’t be fun.

The Mystery

And then there’s that whole mystique thing you have going.  It could be that you’re an overweight lady with no muscle tone.  It could also be that you work out regularly and look awesome for your husband (or future husband).  No one knows—and that’s pretty cool, and pretty frustrating at the same time.

In a culture that puts a price on a body and the degree to which you’ve achieved fitness and curves in the right places, to not know your “competition” means that you don’t know whether you’re better or worse—and we are a competitive people!

The Challenge

But ladies, if it is the case that you’re using modesty as an excuse—that you have used your non-form-fitting clothing to hide the fact that you’re not taking care of yourselves, then it’s nothing to be proud of.  You should be healthy, and you should be taking care to show the one man that makes a difference that you care more about him—that you truly become the immodest woman’s worst nightmare.

Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

  1. She hopes that the guys that are watching are ones that she would be attracted to! []

  1. good word! We need to be proactive in keeping a healthy balance. While our culture over-emphasizes physical appearance, the church seems to have gone too far in the opposite direction (this is a generalization). Among Christians it has become a bit taboo to speak openly about the importance of physical attraction.
    As Shaunti Feldhaun writes,
“Be willing to to make the extra effort to take care of yourself. Whether that means little things like dressing neatly or keeping hair brushed, or bigger things like eating healthfully and getting fit, those efforts can completely change how a guys view a girl.”

If only it was that easy to hide it when you’re overweight. This is a very good point. I’m just not sure that it’s all that common. You really can’t be totally out of shape and not look it no matter what you wear.
