Are their any tasks these days that one can do without being bombarded by immodesty?

How do you really feel, Foi?

I’m with you, though – and it’s so hard to not stand there and peruse the headlines! They just kinda suck you in.

  2. Foy says:

I wasn’t really thinking about the headlines – I don’t care if Bush has an identical midget twin – I was thinking more along the lines of the photographs presented.

But of course, as I look at your comment again, I feel as though your entire comment is saturated with sarcasm.

Just imagine if you have little ones! Grrr…

The first half was sarcastic. But by perusing the headlines, I meant scanning the covers of the magazines. It’s juts so hard for me to keep my focus elsewhere.

Some grocery stores I’ve been in have special “family friendly” checkouts that don’t have such magazines…and I’ve noticed that the line for that checkout is always much longer…it seems we aren’t the only ones who are disgusted by this!

it makes me sick! in a GROCERY store, for crying out loud! I hate going with my brothers because of this…it makes me feel so bad for my bro’s. I thank God for my parents who have taught me to love dressing modestly and develop, with the help of God, my own convictions and standards in this area. Anne

It’s funny that you should bring this topic up, Foy. I was in the supermarket the other day thinking just about the same thing– and what to do about it.

I thought about taking the front covers and turning them around, or looking for something to cover up the headlines, etc.

I’ve seen some places have clocking pieces of plastic that show the magazine title, and perhaps the middle, but not the side-lines. Those were nice.

We need to come up with a strategy so that we don’t just vent, but that we actually do something. Follow it up, Foy?

  8. Foy says:

    Ya, that’s not a bad idea….
And I take it that you are referring not only to to magazine covers, but also having strategies for everything else, correct?

    • MInTheGap says:

Well, it’s hard to take over the world without a plan. :)

Seriously, though, it would be interesting to know what our options are– should we organize some letter writing? can you put something in front of them (legally)? Can you turn them around? It would be interesting to know what we could do– but I’m not even sure who to ask?

  9. anne says:

i’ve heard of turning them around before. i was cautioned, “Don’t do it. The pictures on the back are worse.” that’s just what i was told, i really don’t know.

  10. ErinL says:

I’d have no problems taking a different magazine (like a cooking one, for instance) and putting it in the front of the rack of offending magazings.
I’m sure a petition could be started to stores (i.e. Wal*Mart) that don’t provide covers for offensive magazines.

  11. Foy says:

    I’ve learned that I’m busy! :P

Give me some time, and I’ll get something.

  12. Christin says:

Yea, I hate this. My husband and I (and our entire family) do all of our shopping together and I always tell my kids to look on the other side of the aisle where the candy and trinkets are! And as my husband helps unload the cart, I am busy turning around all the worst magazines (while people behind me are giving me funny looks). I haven’t noticed the backs to be worse. Usually they advertise a car or something not repulsive, from my experience.
I’ve never noticed a family friendly line, but that would be nice here.
I have two boys, and it is NEVER too soon to keep their eyes from seeing this stuff.Gosh and it’s everywhere. :(

    Christins last blog post..Poll!!!!

  13. Lady Abigail says:

I’ve known people who would go through an entire store and turn all the inappropriate magazines around. But sometimes the photo on the back is just as bad or even worse. :( And they have to put them in the aisles where everyone has to walk.
