Skirts seem to be really popular right now. Every store has at least some selection, and you can always find classic denim and black, along side plaid, pleated and PCskirtfrilly skirts. I love that!

But…the hard part is finding skirts you can actually wear if you have any standards! I’m not necessarily even talking about floor-length skirts (although I love ‘em, especially for crawling around on the floor with a toddler). I’m just talking about skirts that don’t end somewhere north of your knees!

Well, I’ve done some digging and come up with some stores (some have store-fronts and others are just online) that have skirts that I would let my daughter wear (if I had one).

This is by no means a comprehensive list; I have simply tried to present a list that covers different budgets, tastes and styles.

My personal belief is that skirts should be long enough to cover your knees when standing and seated at the very shortest, so my suggestions and links will cover skirts up to that length. Your preferences might be different, so if you don’t like what I’ve found, look Chadwicksskirt around and then leave a comment here with what you’ve come up with!

The Skirt Site—Knee-length to floor-length skirts; mostly denim with a few cute knit skirts thrown in for good measure.

Eddie Bauer—Classic store with good quality. Their skirt selection changes with the seasons; but they normally have at least one or two good ones. (And if the length isn’t quite right, check and see if the skirt comes in “tall”. That tends to add an extra 2-3” to length.)

Land’s End—Always a good choice for quality. Lots of below-knee to mid-calf length skirts. Classic styles.

Modest Apparel USA—A large selection of mid-calf to ankle-length skirts (including maternity skirts). Affordable prices.

Ringger Clothing—Custom-made skirts, including maternity skirts.

Butter and Honey—A home business that custom-makes long skirts, including maternity. (I’ve worked with this company before, and they are excellent!)

Travelsmith—Comfortable, stylish and modest skirts for traveling and living. A bit expensive, but they do run sales too!

Orvis—Beautiful skirts (mostly around mid-calf length). These are on the pricier side, but they do often have nice sales. Nice fabrics and styles—very feminine.

Sierra Trading Post—Sierra carries clothing from other companies that is being sold due to small defects or is a closeout. They have quite a few Orvis skirts, as well as several other modest skirts.

Christa Taylor—CT has below-knee to ankle-length skirts.

Funky Frum—Fashionable and modest skirts.

Tzunius—a Jewish site; great selection of skirts in many styles and lengths.

Blair—Reasonable prices and some very cute and feminine skirts!

Hannalise—Nice selection of sizes. Most of the skirts to not have slits.

Paulina Carmel—Cute and stylish clothing! There is not a lot of selection, but it is pretty and affordable.

Fabskirts—Custom-made in one of seven styles. Looks like reasonable prices.

Newport-News—They have some long feminine skirts, and some very good sales/clearance.

Chadwicks—There are always some nice modest and cute skirts here! A good range of sizes as well.

MyCulottes—A home business that sells culottes, skirts, and jumpers (maternity jumpers as well). They provide a customized length for an extra charge.

Ricci Fashions—I have never heard of this place until I was writing this article. However, it looks like a reasonably-priced site, with sizes ranging from S-4X.

Katie’s Mercantile—Home-made skirts (including maternity skirts with button-hole elastic—the best invention ever for maternity skirts!).

Lilo Maternity—Beautiful long maternity skirts that are very reasonably priced.

These are all links to retail stores that sell new clothing. But even if you can’t afford to buy new skirts, there are still several options out there!

  1. E-bay! There are lots and lots of beautiful skirts on here, for a fraction of the cost of buying one new.
  2. Thrift-stores. You may have to look a bit harder, and not have success at every trip; but you can find some really nice, quality skirts for $2-3.
  3. Sew. If you can sew, you can make skirts for not very much money, especially simple A-line skirts. If you can’t sew, find a friend who can and trade baby-sitting, music lessons or cleaning for her to sew you a few skirts.

Where do you enjoy finding skirts? Leave me a comment and let me know!

A wife to my handsome man and mama to my little man. I spend my days fixing meals and cuddling. I live in the cold, cold north, where there are four seasons: almost snow, lots of snow, more snow, and the two days of summer. I love the subject of modesty, but am dissapointed that there seems to be so little of it in today's clothing. Maybe this will be my very small way of helping to bring it back.

I just purchased 4 really beautiful long skirts at Goodwill tonight. They were all only 3 dollars each and in fantastic condition (1 actually still has the tags on it!). There were so many to choose from but I settled on the 4 that I did because they are neutral (1 is a dark grey, 1 is a very pretty chocolate brown, 1 is a dark navy blue that is almost black and the other is black). They are very versatile and the brands are very good brands, quality made so they should last a long time. I know had I purchased them new I would have paid more than 100 dollars for all of them; I got all for for 12 dollars! :-)

Thank you for this list! I have a disadvantage in that I have a small waist and big hips, so if it fits modestly in one place it’s far too big in the other. But I’m also short, so length isn’t usually much of a problem.

This is a great list! I have heard of a few of them before, but I will be checking out more of these from the list. Yes, Lady Abigail, the hips are always a problem aren’t they!

Thanks for your share.I Love herve leger he actually designs clothes in mind for those who wear them-women, not tennage boys ! if every model said I’m not going under my healthy BMI the fashion world would have to start using healthy models. Like a strike to eat instead!

Hi! I just found your page while looking for photos to add to my site. I hope it is O.K. for me to share my modesty site with you. Here it is: http://modestclothingandskirts.blogspot.com/

I just started it and have gently pre-owned skirts and clothing. I am also looking for nice modest photos to add to my ‘Fashion’ page, so if anyone wants to share a photo, let me know! I actually love the photo at the top of this page with the skirt and boots! Nice.

  18. Kim says:

Modesty is something we value in our family. I refuse to let my preteen Daughter wear most of the skirts and dresses in stores these days. I now make skirts for her. She loves them!

I own a modest skirt shop on Etsy for girls. Go check it out!

What is hard is when you are short and small, length is not a problem, for me they are too long usually! I hate hemming skirts as they tend to give it a “homemade look” that I like to avoid!
I found ebay solved that as I could look by length and a skirt that may be short on you….would be mid calf, almost ankle length on me!

I really appreciate this post. I have hard a hard time finding skirts as well, so I started sewing :) I’ve been running an etsy shop selling skirts for women and girls since August. I was wondering if I should start making even longer styles, I think I found my answer!
Coming soon to http://www.wearmecomfortably.etsy.com : long wrap skirts to fit any shape :)

I have a shop on Etsy that specializes in skirts and slips for the modest preschool-age girl. I just opened, but am adding stuff as I can. Right now there are skirts, slips, and bloomers, but I hope to add special occasion dresses and some undershirt-slip combos in the future!
