Belts

Ok. So maybe I’m old fashioned. But I always believed that belts were used to hold up your pants. Right?

No one wants their pants falling down.

Well, most people don’t want that to happen. Our world has changed – so much so that style is sought after more than functionality. People became more concerned with looking good than actually having quality clothes. This even affected the humble belt. Guy belts soon had big belt buckles; girl belts became “bedazzled”, first with sparkles, and now with shiny studs. And know what? Belts  aren’t even being used on pants anymore. Instead, they’re being placed on shirts and dresses. They become, in effect, useless. But they’re SHINY! And bright. And full of Bling. So they are used. A lot. Even when they are actually used on pants, the pants themselves are quite low, making one wonder: “If you have a belt, why not use it properly, eh?”

As I look at these belts, and think “Is this Modest?”, I have to say no. The entire concept of modesty revolves around wearing clothes that do not attract attention to one’s “assets” – both north and south. All a shiny belt does is scream: “Look at my waist!” Once an eye goes there, lets just say that things, including the eye, go downhill. By wearing a dull colored belt, one can have functionality and yet keep themselves modest.

I’m going to respectfully disagree with you that a drab belt is the only modest belt. There are so many more factors to anticipate. For instance, I used to have a jean jacket that was decorated with brass studs. It wasn’t gaudy, the studs didn’t cover the whole jacket. They were just accents. Same with the belt I had that matched. One single row of brass studs, spaced apart on the length of the belt. Because it accompanied a matching jacket, I don’t see how that would draw attention to my waist.

Additionally, what if someone was wearing a dull-colored belt, but was wearing it with a white blouse and light-blue jeans? It would still stand out from the outfit… would this be immodest?

To me, this is where I’d have to see it to make up my mind. I mean, I think that you could go so far as to say that if you’re wearing a belt that would draw attention, you’re probably wearing a pair of pants that are tight around the midsection.

The question that was in my mind reading this post is “why are you wearing a flashy belt?” It’s the same question we have to ask regardless of what we wear. Motives play a big part when it comes to modesty.

That’s why country guys have big honkin’ belts with names and stuff on them. They’re begging for you to look at them.

I hate seeing people wearing baggy pants – fitted pants are the way to go, in my opinion. But where does “fitted” cross the line to “tight” in your opinion?

Well, definitely if I wonder if you needed the equivalent of a shoe horn (or those commercials where they need to have jeans soaked in water in order or lying on a bed to put them on should be a good indication that you’re dealing with tight rather than fitted. I would say anything that accentuates “what you got” is probably crossing the line.

You’re correct; contrast is the key.

    Regarding tightness:
Some people (like me) enjoy semi-baggy pants so that our legs don’t become one huge chafe mark. Other people definitely pass the line, though, and wear pants that are excessively baggy.

It is really, really too bad that no one on here has any opinions on this subject…I mean, it’s just too quiet around here! :-P (j/k)

See, tight, fitted, loose-fitting, and baggy are all grey areas. I agree that if you can see panty lines, etc it’s too tight, but I feel like a slob if I’m wearing pants that are too loose in the waist.

Things change. Belts are used with shirts and dresses usually to make something loose a little more fitted (so that a woman looks like a woman, not a man). I think it’s fine when done right. :)
