Godly Shopping

CBR001224I went shopping the other day. Shopping malls are always a difficult ordeal. Wading through the mess of unattractive, unfeminine, and immodest clothes to find a handful of pieces that fit the necessary criteria is hard enough. Then add the trial of finding something at a decent price on top of that, and you (or I at any rate) leave the giant complex with one, maybe two pieces at most!

Sometimes it feels good to just give in and say, “Oh, I’ll just buy this one piece. Honestly, how much harm can a shirt with a kind of…rather…really low neckline do?” But this is not what God wants. We shouldn’t shop with a “how-far-can-I-go-without-going-over-the-line” attitude. Rather, we should approach clothes shopping with questions like these: “What could cause my brothers in Christ to stumble, and how do I avoid that?” and more importantly, “How does what I wear glorify God, and how can I come closer to that?” Instead of buying clothes with a “me-first” mentality, we need (as it is with everything) to switch our minds over to a “God-first” mentality.

“Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.” (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

Sincerely,

Miss S.

Not my next post, but the one after, I plan on addressing (odd pun hidden in there) a similar issue about box stores. Interesting that you touched on it a little.

I gotcha. Where else is there to shop, really, though?

Lots of places are popping up online, though it’s hard to get ideas of sizing when you can’t try things on– I know. There are also smaller shops that are now appearing, but you have to be in bigger cities to find them.

Right. I usually won’t shop online. I must be able to try things on before I buy them. I usually just spend some extra time at each store and leave after an hour or two of shopping with only one or two items.

I’d also recommend thrift stores and consignment shops. I hate shopping in thrift stores, but I can find so many better clothes there than in new stores.

I usually go shopping and leave with a bunch of things….but I also rarely (like once or twice a year) go shopping. We have a very good Goodwill with lots of selections, so I usually go there. Occasionally I’ll shop among the clearance racks at the mall and get a few things, but most of the time not.
