Venice tie-dye beach skirt

There is a whole debate out there whether it’s modest for a woman to be in pants.  The problem with pants, is two fold (as far as I can see).

You Look Like a Guy

The Old Testament of the Bible tells young ladies and young men that they should not wear clothes that pertain to the opposite sex.  The problem here is that the Old Testament of the Bible also talks about not lifting your father’s skirt.  One could make a reasonable argument that skirts may actually be men’s fashion and not women’s.

I only slightly jest here, of course.  It’s important to realize that God created two different sexes, and that they are distinct—and have distinct features.  However, just a quick glance through the jean department of a local department store will show you that there’s a difference between guys and girls pants.

Length vs. Tightness

When it comes to skirts, it’s length that is the major issue.  My college had an easy standard for modesty.  Girl’s skirts had to cover the knee.  This was an easy measure, and it would also grant some degree of modesty even when sitting.

When it comes to pants, however, you need to be careful about how tight the pants are on various parts of your body, how well they cover you when you bend down for things, and what it looks like when you have things in your pockets.

And Then There’s This…

Ten Reasons that Skirts are Better Than Pants

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 5 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 3 years ago.

BUT, there are many skirts that are way too tight and/or worn that way on purpose… I think it is how you wear the article and if your intentions behind wearing it ARE meant to bring attention to yourself, or a certain area of your physique… i.e. your derriere can be accented just as well in a tight skirt as tight pants :-(

Yikes on that list. But it was kinda funny.

I agree with Sallie, skirts can be way too tight. And with skirts going low rise as well as jeans, you get the same “crack” worries that you have with low-cut pants. (If you must ask me how I know this, remember I work with teenage girls).

I kinda like the list! And while I don’t have a problem with pants in and of themselves, I find skirts to be much more feminine and make me feel beautiful. I don’t normally find that when I’m wearing pants…

I do agree, skirts are nicer, pretty-er [?] and often much more modest. But in today’s day and age, it’s just not reasonable. If you were to wear a skirt longer then the knee that was loose enough to be called modest, they would get in the way. I could not easily walk through the halls of my school while wearing a skirt because they swirl and there are just too many people, it would get caught in my locker, and people would step on it while sitting in my desk. Skirts are just not possible, and jeans are easier.

@Sallie: The truth is that any piece of clothing can be modest or immodest depending on the way it is worn– however I find that Skirts are generally less tighter than pants, but they are more than likely to show more leg.

    @Rachel: I’m sure you’re right.

@Erin: I agree, skirts are much more indicative of a woman, and they are definitely more feminine.

@Cami: I guess it depends on the cut and function. I can see where school would be a hard place to be in a skirt, and yet my sister in high school pulled it off from time to time.

    Erin:
I completely agree with you! I rarely find that feeling while wearing pants as well.
    Cami:
What kind of skirt are you thinking of? I wear skirts all day every day, and I have no problems whatsoever. I can do nearly anything in a skirt that fits me, is below the knee, and flowy…even walking through large crowds of people.
“People would step on it while sitting in my desk”
Maybe if it is ankle length, billowy, and draping onto the floor…but really, how can one step on something that is at least a foot away from the ground? I guess I’m not really being very nice, but I just can’t seem to understand your argument.

We driffted a little bit away, this website is about modeststy.

But I can agree with Cami, I love skirts & long dresses, but you have to be relevant to this/your generation(like Paul said somwhere:”I’m a Greek with Greeks and a Roman with Romans”, our 1st mission also should be to reach this generation for christ).

In past centurys all women wore dresses for everykind of work, but today it’s nearly the opposite. If you were odd skirts (with this top especially), people could think you belong to a sect, or you are weird or amish.

I think everbody has to draw a fine line between beeing relevant and in beeing modest & unique at the same time.

Bythe way maybe on a lady who is more mature (I meant
older), maybe this or a similar outfit would look totally different even relevant to her generation and to the people, who she is influencing, you maynever know….

Skirts are definitely better than pants for many reasons. Pants can be necessary at times though, so I don’t totally rule them out. I great prefer skirts though. :)
