Hey Girl, Nice Shoes

I don’t know how you walk in them. Seriously, I know it takes practice. I know that it makes you feel sexier. I just can’t understand the woman that wears them all day!

Men’s Health believes a girl wearing heels is thinking:

“Is he checking out my butt?”

A funny story regarding heels. Last year my wife and I went to a Valentine’s Day banquet held at my church where they had a competition for who had the best looking legs—except it was for the guys!

They had a few men go behind a screen, take off their socks and shoes, and show their legs under the divider. When it was my turn, I decided to take advantage of what heels do to the calf muscles, and walked forward and back on my tip toes.

Needless to say, I won hands down.

I say all this because it’s no surprise to you girls that high heels effect your lower half in a way that makes your legs more attractive. That’s why they are often paired with a short skirt or tight jeans, both of which would be immodest.Hilt Pump

Is This Modest?

High heels themselves are not immodest, as much as what they’re paired with. It’s not wrong, in my book, for a girl to help her height using heels. It’s when she decides to show off her legs in these heels that crosses the line.

I have no problem with women wearing these paired with a modest formal or something of that nature. At that point you’ve left talking about modesty and started talking about the torture you’re putting your feet through!

I'm a 35 year old guy married to the most beautiful woman in the world (VirtuousBlonde) for 10 years, and has 4 mostly adorable children-- depending on whether they've had a nap, of course. I'm a software developer by trade, though I like to write on various topics. I got my start in blogging at MInTheGap in 2004 writing about culture, politics and got started talking about modesty on this site just 2 years ago.

    Too funny.

Another dimension to heels is that they make us feel more feminine and petite. Take a look at the picture at this link: http://z.about.com/d/shoes/1/0/H/f/high_heels_long_skirts.jpg There’s nothing tight, short, or revealing about her skirt, but the outfit just wouldn’t be nearly as cute if she were wearing flats.

Another style for women who like to wear heels (for the femininity) would be the kitten heel. It’s a very small heel (less than an inch, I think) but you still get to wear a pretty little shoe that makes you feel feminine.

I pretty much avoid heels at all costs, but not for modesty – I hate my feet being uncomfortable! The only place you will see me in heels is a wedding or formal/professional affair, and even in those situations I usually go with kitten.

I don’t see how anyone walks in 3 inch stilettos!

I’m pretty sure it’s something you’d have to work up– especially because of the fact that you’d not only have to practice your balance, but your muscles and tendons would have to get used to it.

I kept looking for a survey I read once that heels were the #1 accessory that men thought made women look sexy, but I couldn’t find it.

    Pretty crazy.

Kitten heels are so cute! Rachel, I so want to go shopping with you right now. :)

I own a pair of 3 inchers which I adore. I actually wore them to a job intervew in May where part of the icebreaker was doing a little dance. It was, um… interesting. But I love those shoes! They’re really the only heels I ever wear, I’m usually in flats. (Hubs is 1/2″ taller than me and a little sensitive about it…) But I love when I get the chance to wear them.

My mom actually can’t wear flats anymore. She wore 2″ and 3″ heels for so many years, her achilles tendon shortened and it hurts her to have her feet flat. Craziness!

Some women wear heels because they make their feet look smaller. It’s hard to pull off flats when you have feet that are big in proportion to the rest of you — unless you don’t mind having men say, “Hey, I like your boats/skis”.

I laughed about your story, but that definitely makes the point. High-heels aren’t just immodest. They’re also downright dangerous and uncomfortable.

What a funny little story. Point made. I don’t wear heels very often, but I enjoy wearing them occasionally. Of course, I always wear them with a long skirt so that they are modest. Kitten heels are great for that added “girliness” but not loads of height.
