I don't own many v-necks. Guess now that I know this, that's a good thing. ;) I have to agree with some of the others, I don't think shallow v-necks are immodest.

I'll have to think about this one. It's hard sometimes being a woman and deciding what is modest and what is not. That shirt with something underneath doesn't seem at all immodest to me, but then, I'm a woman. I think differently than a man.

@Anna Grace: Obviously, Men's Health wasn't saying that the V-Neck you linked to was something that was going to make a girl think "Give me your sperm."

@Rachel: You're right. It's not necessarily the shape, but the depth that's the problem.

Thanks, Rachel! I know I'm funny... but looks aren't everything. :D

I'm determined now to find a picture of a very shallow V necked shirt to show MIn. So far, no luck. Except men's V necks. Which kinda defeats the purpose...

Anna Grace, you are cracking me up!

Oh the shirt pictured, Min, I think you would be right - the V comes all the way down to the center of the breasts on the mannequin. However, there are other v-necks (like Anna Grace mentioned) that are still tasteful. I watch a lot of What Not to Wear (shameful, I know) and every time a larger-busted woman is on the show, they pick out v-neck shirts with undershirts (I don't always approve of their undershirts - they like to pick embelleshed or lacy camis to go underneath which I think defeats the purpose of drawing the eyes away from the chest area). Their advice to these women is that v-necks open the chest area (the part above the brests) and if the shirt is paired with a pretty necklace and earrings that is flattering with the woman's coloring, it will minimize the appearance of her breasts and draw the eyes toward the facial area.

Ooh, MIn, I just noticed the guy in the picture is wearing a V neck! Scandalous!

The scandalousness (haha, fun new word) of the V neck has a lot to do with the depth of the V. I have plenty of V necks which are shallow. I've always hated my bust and I don't own anything that draws attention there (as far as my female mind is aware of, anyway).

This is exactly why I liked the idea of this site, Rachel. Because I believe that, depending on the person and the outfit, something that is modest for one may be immodest for another.

Hence why we need the discussion, and to actually look at clothing that is and is not modest.

I don't think the undershirt works because of where the V-neck falls and where it draws the eyes. Could it be ok in certain circumstances? I'd probably have to see it.

I have to respectfully disagree with this and agree with Anna Grace - studies have shown that V-necks actually minimize the "size" of larger-chested women. It also (so I've heard) draws more attention to the facial area. Again, I'm saying this only works for larger-chested women. For women who are concerned about how large their top looks, I think this with a nice, MODEST tank beneath would be fine. Also check the armholes - if it's sleeveless you want to make sure no bra straps or sides are showing.

What about wearing an undershirt which is the same color and similar fabric as the V neck top?
